I specialize in working with adolescents and adults who have survived traumatic experiences such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, bullying, death of a loved, etc.
I specialize in working with women and teen girls with past/present trauma. Living as a trauma survivor is not easy and can be exhausting. Does anxiety and depression seem to control your life or preventing you from pursuing your goals? Are you struggling with adverse childhood trauma? Are your relationships affected? Trauma is a complex and unique experience for each individual. You are not the same person you once were. I believe everyone deserves a safe and supportive space to work through life's challenges. It is understood that seeking therapy can be a difficult decision, but I am here to support you every step of the way.

I specialize in working with adult trauma survivors, particularly those experiencing PTSD and Complex Trauma as a result of domestic violence, sexual assault, spiritual abuse, and childhood trauma.
EMDR Trained - Certified Trauma Professional: Welcome to my Psychology Today page! The effects of trauma are varied and can show up as anxiety, depression, dissociation, grief, intrusive negative thoughts, disturbing memories and dreams, engagement in unhealthy relationship patterns, and low self-esteem. What you are experiencing is a NORMAL reaction to trauma, and healing is possible. As a former educator, I have found that developing an understanding of the effects of trauma on the nervous system is a good way to begin fostering self-compassion, which is the first step in developing resilience and beginning the healing process.

Teens want to be heard and understood. They are facing an abundance of obstacles that they need help navigating. I’m here to do just that. I use an empathetic, non-judgmental approach to connect with my clients and determine the best methods to use to help them reach their therapeutic goals. I have found that including the family in this process has not only been beneficial for the client but the entire family as a whole.

We have all struggled at various times, perhaps lacking hope for the future. Whether it's working on difficult relationships, working through past issues or addictions, or simply needing a professional third party to help work through certain situations, counseling is a great place to start.

I like to help people who want to make permanent changes in thinking, feeling and decision making. This doesn't happen from learning scripts of how to act or talk but rather from awareness and identification of past programming, and a plan. I have a unique foundation professionally and personally to partner with you in exploring your life and your goals. I will meet you where you are and support you in getting a better life; the one you want. If you realize that you are not reaching your human potential; not truly living, you know it is time to do something. I want to work together to improve your life in the "here and now."

Some changes can be more difficult than others, and I believe therapy can help individuals navigate through difficulties and other stressors. My goal as a therapist lies in working to help my clients overcome obstacles and life stressors by teaching skills to improve thoughts, overall mood, and move towards healthier behaviors in order for them to meet personal goals and live healthier, more fulfilling lives. I use a variety of different methods that are individualized to meet the need of each client.

Allowing my clients to experience the world of counseling in a positive way. I practice positive psychology, which will give my clients a whole new way of looking at their lives, even though the world may not be the most positive place they see. My clients will be introduced to skills that will help them move forward in a life they thought they were "stuck" in. I help my clients see their strengths as their motivators for life's uneasy situations. I am a counselor that is a Christian, and can assist those clients that use faith as a basis for handling life's obstacles.

My strongest belief as a therapist is that there must be a connection between therapist and client, one of trust and respect. Not all therapists are a right fit for you, you have to find the therapist you connect with. I have worked with individuals and their families to gain skills for coping with and managing issues surrounding depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and behavioral struggles along with relational and personal issues. I have worked with adolescents in hospital outpatient settings as well as private practice. I have experience working with children, adult individuals, couples, and families.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
