Together, with compassion and unconditional positive regard, we’ll enhance your capacity to resolve familial or romantic conflicts, combat perfectionism, manage anxious thoughts, overcome feelings of deflation or hopelessness, and build back your self esteem.
As an Indo-Guyanese American psychotherapist, I understand the complexities of growing up within multiple cultures and religions, often feeling torn between fitting in and discovering your true self. My upbringing in an interfaith, mixed-religion household has provided me with unique insights that empower me to support POC women, South Asian and Indo-Caribbean men, interracial/interfaith couples, and families who are seeking to strengthen their sense of identity and alignment with themselves and others.

Antoinette Bonafede, LCSW, DBT, CBT, REBT is an experienced clinician that treats people of all ages. A client usually is struggling but feels connected enough with me as their therapist to speak openly and freely about their experience. They can accept feedback with an understanding that we are both on the same team. When we touch on something out of their comfort zone, I hope they recognize they are safe and can stay engaged in the process. Together, we push past the barriers preventing them from feeling better, and they gain a better understanding of themselves to meet their potential.

Are relationships a source of stress in your life? Whether it’s your partner, single status, family, friends, or co-workers, your interactions take up mental space and cause anxiety. On the outside, you're fine! On the inside, you’re comparing and worrying what other people think and feel, trying to keep them happy, or playing defense. You just want to feel grounded, accepted, and comfortable in your own skin and for people to know and value you for who you are. I believe you get to live your life in authentic connection with others, while confidently pursuing your own goals and dreams.

My favorite part of being a therapist is collaborating with folks as they become more and more themselves. So much can get in the way. Layers of protection that dull emotional expression and receptiveness; adaptations to anxiety and trauma that make forward movement hard; difficult relational experiences keeping us stuck in unhelpful patterns; chronic low self-esteem that makes it hard to see ourselves clearly; familial/social/cultural expectations and influences can elicit confusion, and depression can dull connection to everything/anything - to ourselves, as much as to others.

My specialties and interests include anxiety (general, social, panic, phobias), depression, self esteem, self-worth and identity issues, relationship challenges, communication difficulties, and life stage transitions.
I aspire to create a space that is welcoming, safe, non-judgmental, empathic and introspective. My goal is to help you learn about yourself and how you relate to others so that you can make positive improvements that are lasting. Therapy can be challenging; but my belief is that through this meaningful work you will develop a deeper sense of self and awareness of strengths that may have gone undiscovered to this point. In therapy, issues to be resolved will be addressed with the idea that self-awareness leads to choice, responsibility and change.

My passion is to help clients make life changes that bring confidence, fulfillment and authenticity. As a Core Energetics Practitioner, with over fifteen years of experience, I help clients reengage their flow, purpose and direction. We can easily lose our sense of direction when struggles take over, whether those struggles are personal, relational or financial. We can find ourselves stuck in survival mode, depressed and anxious. Thoughts and movements become blocked and disconnected; we no longer feel in the flow of life.

Therapy can be a wonderful way of finding meaning in one's life - as it is now - while still striving to make important changes. Using a whole-person approach to treatment, I take into account one's personal goals, culture, spiritual beliefs, and current life context. I believe a thoughtful, individualized, and collaborative approach tends to be the most therapeutic. At this time I am only doing tele therapy and only for those in NY. I also offer coaching for psychology professionals looking to make the switch to online work. My current areas of focus are stress management, habit change, self-compassion and intuition development.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
