With extensive experience working with trauma, substance use, co-dependence/ACOA, and other co-occurring mental health diagnoses, Erica accompanies individuals, couples, and families on their journeys toward recovery and wellness. Erica takes pride in creating a calm and nurturing environment for her clients, providing them with a safe and comfortable place for self-exploration, expression, and emotional healing. Her psychodynamic approach to counseling is often described as relatable, strength-based and holistic, believing that one level of the self should never be the focus of clinical attention to the exclusion of another.

I enjoy working from various treatment approaches including Psychodynamic, Relational, Narrative, and Internal Family Systems therapies.
There may be many reasons why you are seeking therapy at this time. Perhaps you’re feeling lost in your own life and struggling to connect with yourself and those around you. Maybe you want to find ways to live a fuller, more satisfying, and meaningful life. Therapy provides a unique environment to explore these issues. Together, we will co-construct a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space. I believe in the potential of the therapeutic relationship to facilitate acceptance and warmth toward what might feel like the most painful or shameful parts of yourself.

My belief is that the client knows best so I work from a person centered and psychodynamic approach, but I also pull from different modalities such as CBT, DBT, solution focused, motivational interviewing and reality therapy, based on the client’s needs.
I utilize creativity through art therapy and talk therapy to cultivate a safe environment in order to promote healing for all ages. Sometimes it is difficult to find the words to express ourselves and art can be another way to communicate those thoughts, feelings and experiences. Or just talking if you prefer! I specialize in managing symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, emotion dysregulation as well as addictive behaviors.

I use an integrative approach incorporating psychodynamic, somatic therapy (EMDR, Hakomi & Somatic Experiencing techniques) and psychodrama techniques.
Are you lost in your emotions, and feel like life is unraveling? Do you feel stuck and alone? I believe early life experiences shape how we see ourselves and the world around us that can develop into negative beliefs about who we are. Over time old beliefs and patterns that once helped protect us are no longer useful and can cause disruption in all areas of life. One of the bravest things you can do is seek help and begin to understand your own story. You can be free of emotional pain, find meaning and purpose in your life and release past trauma.

Each person, male or female, is accepted as a unique individual and accepted for where they are at this point in time. I bring an awareness that an individual's behavior and feelings are multidetermined by many complex factors - family of origin, societal, interpersonal relationships and individual characteristics and experiences. Understanding, change and better adaptation are feasible goals for all individuals.

An ideal client is anyone who is willing to show up for themselves. Therapy can be intimidating and uncomfortable, and sometimes the last place a person wants to be. When that person shows up to their session despite this, and with a genuine hope to change their life for the better, we can begin working towards whatever that means for them.

The body and the mind have a powerful connection. How you feel affects how you think. Constant worrying can lead to headaches, high blood pressure, or other serious problems, while health problems can lead to stress, depression, and anxiety. Together we can combat these problems. From my therapy sessions, I provide people with a positive outlook on life in order to better handle mental health problems. I also provide stress-management techniques for individuals so they can understand the root of their problems and develop plans for life-long happiness.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
