I am currently accepting new clients! I work with teens, young adults and those in the perinatal population (pre-natal, post-partum, motherhood). I especially enjoy working with women looking to manage stress around pregnancy, pregnancy loss, and the stressors of navigating post-partum and motherhood. I have advanced training in maternal mental health. I believe forming a strong bond with a client using compassion, empathy, and humor, will help them feel more comfortable to open up and explore their emotional barriers.

Healthy and fulfilling human connection is more important and meaningful now than ever before. Feeling safe and comfortable out in the world, and/or readjusting after several years that made us re-think our most intimate relationships and how we connect with our partners, can be unsettling and exhausting. Peer relationships, family connections, or life partners, I work collaboratively with clients across the life span. I am an advocate for preventative care in all aspects of our lives, including our mental health and relational health.

I have done parenting work teaching effective parenting skills, boundaries and addressing parent-child conflict for 10 years.
Currently accepting NEW clients. My clients struggle with feeling stuck, hopeless and exhausted, both as individuals, life partners or parents, lacking peace in their life and relationships due to unresolved trauma. Trauma is often the root cause of chronic mental and physical health issues, the inability to maintain healthy relationships, and low self worth. Trauma can seep into every aspect of your life. I specialize in clients with trauma and complex trauma. I facilitate an environment for clients to identify unresolved trauma and how it has impacted their lives in past and present relationship cycles.

I especially enjoy supporting my clients with self-compassion, navigating relationships, parenting, setting boundaries, communicating more effectively, and healing from trauma.
I believe that one of the most important things a therapist can do is offer a place where people feel accepted for exactly who they are. When people feel accepted they are more comfortable sharing their stories, working towards change, and accepting themselves. With the support of a therapist, it is possible to gain a better understanding of one’s self, improve relationships, effectively manage stress, see things from a different perspective, and replace what is not working with what might work better. Please visit my website at www.birchhavennh.com for more information.

I have been a practicing social worker for 45 years, and a clinician in the Seacoast area for over 35 years with 20 years in hospice. It's not just about death and dying, it's also about living...living the best possible life, and because everyone dies, every human issue can surface. What is on your mind today and what is getting in your way for living that best possible life?

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
