What do you call it in your life, obstacles, crisis, problems, trauma we all have struggles. We are not designed to take on life alone. We need and get through the difficult times with support. Are you feeling empty or heavy from the load life has given you? Are you in exhaustive contemplation of life's transitions? Do you experience excessive worry or sadness, uncertainty and fatigue? What if you had guidance, someone to illuminate the next step along the path to recovering who you are, the capacity to be resilient and restoring your capabilities to encounter and defeat future obstacles.

Have you ever wondered what your life would be like if you didn’t have anxiety, depression, or substance abuse problems? I believe that clients carry the seed of their own healing within them. My job as a therapist is to help you find and nurture that healing. I work with clients from teens through the end of life. I have specialized knowledge to work with the chronically ill, as well as additional training in alcohol & drug addiction and/or gambling disorders. I offer both individual and family sessions.

Over the last 20 years, I have been working in a community based setting with adults, adolescents, and children with chronic mental and behavioral health issues including but not limited to those struggling with mood disorders, anxiety, depression, anger, PTSD, substance abuse, behavioral and impulse control disorders, trauma, and relationship struggles. I recognize how difficult change can be and strive to be the catalyst in that process. We all deserve the chance to enjoy life.

We don't always expect what life may throw in our direction. Sometimes, even what we would consider a positive change can stress or burden us in ways that make it difficult to feel like ourselves or function at our best. This can result in feeling depressed, anxious, hopeless about the future, or even paralyzed. Relationships change; death, major illness, or relationships ending can contribute to difficulty in living life the way we would like. I work best with individuals suffering from anxiety-related issues, regardless of gender, and those who are struggling with life transitions.

We all have struggles, we all fall short, we have times when we feel we do not measure up, we have crisis, we feel sad and depressed, maybe anxious at times. We are not meant to face our struggles alone. Sometimes trauma from our past have not been resolved and we continue to carry the weight of our past with us.

My primary clients are individuals between 2 - 21 years (Adults on a case-by-case basis). I work with children and their families to provide more information about current presenting social, emotional, and/or behavioral concerns through a thorough assessment (i.e., 5+ hours of direct assessment) and/or through counseling. In counseling, I alone cannot change the person once per week or every other week; parents are key to successful treatment by implementing appropriate strategies, support, and structure needed for improvement (i.e., there is work for the adults too!). I can also help with navigating the school system. So, "How can I help?"

It’s okay to not be okay. Asking for help is the bravest thing you can do. I am here to help! Are you feeling anxious or depressed? Maybe for you it’s anger, withdrawal, or feelings of hopelessness. Maybe you are having relational issues or struggling to work through trauma. Maybe you are a parent struggling to manage tough behaviors with your child. Whatever you are feeling and whatever you are going through, your feelings are valid and you are worthy of help. Sometimes our worries and problems feel so big and so overwhelming, it’s hard to find our way through without a guide and a little extra support. I get it, life is hard!

I believe the therapeutic relationship can be both healing and empowering for individuals. I use a cognitive behavioral, strength-based approach to alleviate the effects of trauma and assist individuals to reaching their goal. As we go through life, we must learn to navigate through traumatic events such as the impact of life-threatening illnesses, childhood abuse, and other traumatic occurrences. Often traumatic experiences change our way of life forcing us to define a “New Normal”; I will provide therapeutic support to combat issues such as anxiety, depression, frustration, and trauma.

As an LGBTQ+ specialist, I help clients be their authentic selves while navigating complex issues, like state legislation that impacts my trans clients. Seeking therapy can be a hard choice. I work with many clients who are terrified to take a step in any direction and are not sure where to start. By helping you see your authentic self and providing an objective perspective, we can begin your journey toward a better place.

My goal is to help you learn to better manage emotions such as stress or anger and recover from divorce or other life losses. We will explore together how you want your life to be different and agree on the best way to get there. I have an adorable partner - my therapy dog, Shadow. She is a "bringer of joy" and helps my clients feel more open and relaxed. She is wonderfully attuned to feelings and will sometimes sit with you as you release your feelings through words, tears, or even silence - all without judgement. I work with individuals who have experienced trauma, are struggling with anxiety, phobias, PTSD, depression, and grief.

I use a collaborative approach in which we work together to establish goals, make a plan for treatment, and continue to partner together in the process of counseling. I ask you to be responsible for whatever content you want to talk about at any given time, and I focus on the way we discuss your concerns so that it helps to build a trusting relationship so you can express your true feelings, find solutions for dealing with stressors, learn more about yourself, and get symptom relief.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
