At some point, we all experience tough times. Coping skills falter, feelings may be intense, and we can’t visualize the way forward. If this is where you find yourself, I can help. My practice focuses on clients navigating periods of distress or unexpected change. If you're dealing with loss, life transition, or simply a “rough patch”, I offer support and guidance. My approach is flexible, welcoming, and compassionate. We sort things through together. You'll find that coping skills improve, emotions become manageable, and you understand yourself better. Most importantly, you’ll gain an increased sense of hope.

Navigating the world as an LGBTQIA+ or gender expansive individual can be challenging, especially as a teen or young adult. Exploring gender/sexuality, while facing homophobia and/or transphobia, can cause significant emotional distress. It can be hard to know how to process and cope with those feelings, or where to turn for help. I hope to provide a safe, affirming environment for adolescents and adults on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum to discuss their unique experiences, and work towards affirmation of their authentic self.

Whether you have been to therapy before or are making the leap to explore yourself for the first time, starting therapy can be intimidating. Maybe you feel that despite your best attempts at putting the puzzle pieces of your life/situation together, you still can't seem to find peace. Maybe you don't know where to even start. We can't evade having emotional experiences, so learning to not only cope, but embrace our emotions is an invaluable skill. If you are struggling with the present, ruminating on the past, or worrying about the future- there is a path forward that is worth exploring.

My passion is to help children find themselves through discovering their strengths, likes/dislikes, coping strategies and effective ways to communicate. Children are not born with the ability to know how they are feeling and the best ways to communicate their wants and needs. Usually they show us through their behavior. It is a great pleasure of mine, to help equip them with these skills. Above all, I love teaching people to believe in themselves because believing is the first step in achieving your goal.

Sometimes on our journey we need an objective guide. I can help you manage problems involving "big feelings” that otherwise overwhelm. If your goal is to start getting new results for old recurring problems we can do that with compassion and curiosity. It is important to explore our personal history to understand why we think or behave the ways we currently do. While personal growth isn't always painless, you don't have to be alone in the process if you have a therapist who will commit to the process along side of you. I can help you gain new perspectives that will get you to solve problems effectively.

How are grief and loss defined? If we broaden the boundaries, the definition can include not only death, but also adjustment to divorce, job loss, abuse, addiction, and estrangement . Individuals can be left feeling anchorless and disconnected. Unprocessed grief and trauma has the potential to lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and vulnerability. I offer a collaborative approach that is attuned to the client’s presenting needs. In this focused work, I facilitate continuing bonds with a loved one or assist in the adjustment to a loss or transition.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
