Do you or a family member feel that life is so difficult and everything you try appears to be falling apart at the seam. Disappointment, hurt, grief and anger can morph into complicated unwanted behavior if left unresolved. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, eating and sleep disorders can arise when life circumstances are overwhelmingly stressful. Over the years the feedback that I have received from clients is: that I am warm, caring, understanding, easy to talk to; willing to help you tell your story by asking the questions that bring out your inner voice and easily reached by phone or text.

We are living in challenging times. The degree of uncertainty we face is enough to cause thoughts and feelings that interfere with our daily functioning. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic issues of depression, anxiety, domestic violence, substance abuse, and suicide were already problems many people struggled with. For many, COVID has caused or intensified these conditions and created a need for additional resources. Resources that lead them to thrive and enjoy time with family and friends.

When you are physically ill you turn to your doctor, hoping they can help you feel better. Problems like depression, anxiety, impulsivity, uncontrollable anger, guilt, or low self-confidence can be as painful, if not more so, than physical illness; they can also create serious relationship and work difficulties. I have over 25 years of experience and I have helped many adults, adolescents, and couples who had received limited or no benefit from previous therapists, other doctors, or medications. I work well with people who are skeptical of, or intimidated by, talk therapy.

Identifying and deciding to work through your personal needs is a bold and courageous step. Although it can be overwhelming to share your story with a therapist who is not known to you, it can also be liberating to speak to a neutral party. I use a warm and non-judgemental approach and value your wellbeing and boundaries. By taking a gradual and exploratory approach, you and I will develop a strong, safe and meaningful relationship in order to reach your particular goals.

It takes courage to embark on the journey of self-discovery. What prompts us to begin that journey is often when we are feeling overwhelmed, repeating same behaviors in relationships or in careers, As a seasoned therapist, my psychodynamic approach to treatment is based on the idea that once we become consciously aware of our unconscious behavior we are more able to self-regulate, self-soothe, and make better and/or different choices in our lives. I believe that being able to identify our needs, and being able to articulate them without fear of abandonment or retaliation, is one of the cornerstones of a healthy relationship.

I believe that my greatest strength is helping people to empower themselves and to engage life in a meaningful way. I work with individuals, couples and families in a predominantly cognitive/ solution-oriented way. I am very present in our work and deeply believe the relationship with the client is paramount. We focus on strengths and assets, the positive, infused with a large dose of humor and humanism. Together we examine attitudes and beliefs and what works and what doesn't. At its best psychotherapy is a creative collaboration between the client and therapist about the client's issues.

Together, we will work to help you gain a greater knowledge of yourself and thereby close the gap between how your life is and how you would like it to be. My therapy focuses on helping you feel better in the short term. However, my main objective is to assist you in identifying patterns of behaviors that are at odds with achieving the changes you desire in your life. Over time, by exploring your unconscious motivations, you will improve coping with everyday life and will gain the freedom to make better choices.

I'm a Clinical Psychologist who's been in private practice for over15 years. My basic training is psychodynamic in nature, though I've worked extensively as a Dialectical Behavior Therapist (DBT), and it's informed my practice of therapy enormously. Originally developed to treat patients with 'Borderline Personality Disorder,' DBT is also immensely helpful to those suffering a wide range of emotional disturbances, including depression, anxiety, anger management problems, eating disorders, difficulties with close relationships, and difficulties in the work place. It's a treatment where the therapist is interactive and "real", and the treatment process is de-mystified.

"When I begin to work with a patient I realize that together we face the challenge of exploring all the complexities, confusion, and hurt that are embedded in the problem for which they seek therapy. With a deep commitment to holding a space for all that is there and listening for the unspoken feelings that lie beneath, I bear witness to the experiential unfolding of what has not before been expressed. Once this happens, patients come into contact with their authentic self, the confusion begins to clear, the hurt sets about healing, and there is trust in this emergent self."

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
