My practice is dedicated to anxiety disorders with emphasis on OCD and OCD Related disorders. As such, approximately 85-90% of the clients that I am currently treating have this diagnosis. I have treated a significant amount of individuals and families who have been afflicted with the aforementioned challenges. This includes in an office setting, out in the community, and in the homes of the client. I'm up-to-date on the latest treatments. I treat clients on the Autism Spectrum, in all capacities (anxiety related and otherwise.) I also provide clinical supervision to other therapists on how to effectively treat their own clients.

As a psychologist, I appreciate the opportunity to witness peoples’ capacity for not only surviving, but also thriving in today’s complicated world. My experience over the past decade has brought me to understand the many ways a therapist’s role is akin to that of a gardener tending to a lotus. Just as the young lotus needs tender care and stillness, I provide a safe, nurturing and collaborative environment. Respecting the lotus’s need for sunlight, I approach therapy with warmth, openness and humor. As a Confucian scholar once said, “I love the lotus because while growing from mud, it is unstained.”

A lot of focus on people with anxiety and depression disorder. Mood swings or other emotional midsections that are causing some level of conflict in their family, social, educational or financial life. A majority of the people I work vary in what they know about themselves from just knowing somethings and wanting to fix it to others being forced by a friend, family member or just some stranger that passed along my name to someone. Range of symptoms from minor to discharges from high levels of care.

Thank you for visiting my page. In my almost 30 years of experience as a therapist, I have learned each of us has unique needs. In our first session we will get clarity on your goals and devise a plan to reach them. Often when people are seeking therapy the first thing they want is relief. Implementing principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can provide that relief early on. Whatever the source of your distress, whether from childhood, recent stressors or any combination thereof, using a culturally sensitive, strength based, CBT approach is an efficient and proven way to restore your sense of well-being.

Authenticity, it turns out, is both extraordinary and terrifying. We crave it, yet fear the judgment it may bring. But guess what? Therapy isn't about becoming someone else; it's about embracing the messy, beautiful, and sometimes downright hilarious person you already are.

Each crisis in our lives is an opportunity for healing and growth. My primary approach is relational psychoanalytic, meaning I help patients use the healing power of the therapeutic relationship to uncover and work on their deepest conflicts. An interactive and empathic therapist, I offer advice and support when needed, and I share my own experiences when I think they will be helpful. Though I have extensive, in-depth training, I rely greatly on intuition and humor in my work.

Over the years in my work with children, couples, families, as well as those struggling with substance use and other difficulties, I think about rocks. Specifically, rocks that weigh us down emotionally, due to difficult childhood experiences, troubling relationships, and from events or challenges one faces in their lives. Many clients come into counseling with the belief that they are inherently flawed. Inevitably, during our work together we uncover some of the rocks that weigh them down emotionally. The resulting awareness can be quite effective in relieving or reducing one from those old self-defeating messages.

Is shame or discomfort around vulnerability getting in the way of connection? Have you been feeling stuck and wondering what’s next? My couples and individuals want to see meaningful change in their lives and they are ready to put in the work. With that, I often describe my style as "caringly confrontational." I provide a validating and nonjudgmental space while calling clients in if something is getting in the way of connection or personal growth.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
