Looking for a therapist can feel like a daunting task! My goal is to help you feel safe, seen, heard, and supported. I am a licensed clinical social worker with more than 24 years of experience providing therapy to women, through my work at Duke. I work with women who are coping with anxiety, mild to moderate depression, and/or chronic health issues. I have extensive experience working with issues related to complex trauma, difficult early childhood experiences, and low self-esteem. I provide a safe and supportive environment, in which to discuss difficult topics, as you are ready.

Loving someone with a substance problem can be agony. Frustration, arguing, isolation, guilt, blame, worry, hopelessness, fury–in a word, suffering–have eclipsed normal and everyday enjoyment. You may be desperate. You may be afraid that nothing will help. You just want it to stop. You don’t know if you should stay or if you should leave. You don’t know if you’re helping or making things worse. You can’t stand fighting and feeling mad all the time. Folks are telling you to give “tough love,” to “detach,” threaten, punish, give ultimatums, or “just” leave. You feel alone, misunderstood, and change seems like it will never come.

Hi there. I’m Katelyn, an addiction specialist and mental health counselor. I offer space for you to process the ways that substance use and misuse–whether by you or a loved one–might hinder you from living a flourishing life. People I meet with are typically seeking to break long term addictions, achieve a healthier lifestyle, and/or seeking help around a complex relationship with someone who is abusing substances. Others are in sobriety and may be seeking support or to process past trauma that led to their initial misuse. Some are seeking to use substances in moderation and others are seeking a sober lifestyle.

My approach as a therapist is relational. I see therapy as a chance to connect with another human in a protected relationship that allows for greater openness and honesty. In the safety of our relationship, I challenge my clients so that we get beneath the surface to gain insight, find greater meaning, grounding, and deeper connection. I specialize in work with men, those experiencing divorce, life transitions, and relationship issues, and struggling with substance use.

As a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS) I provide individual psychotherapy, viewing each individual within the context of their environment & their inner sources. I have worked at all levels of care. I appreciate collaborating with other treatment providers to provide the best care possible. In the midst of a struggle, we can often lose sight of our strengths, and I work alongside clients to re-connect to their inherent resilience/resources. I meet clients where they are and strive to create a therapeutic environment that is affirming, accepting and inclusive

I welcome clients to my practice who are struggling with many of life's challenges, including substance use and addiction, anxiety, grief and loss, life transitions, family and relationship stress, and trauma. I believe no problem is too big or too small for therapy. You may identify as a high achiever who is used to getting things done and possibly caring for others. Who holds space for you?

Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed? It's easy to feel unsettled these days. The pace of life just keeps getting faster and stress keeps piling on. In addition to worrying all the time you’ve also been having more physical problems: digestive issues, headaches, trouble sleeping. You never feel rested anymore. The truth is, you just don’t feel like yourself. It all seems like too much. With all that is going on it’s hard to know where to turn and who to trust. The good news is you don't have to face the difficulties of life alone. Together we can find an approach that works for YOU!

I provide evidence-based therapy to individuals and couples, with three primary areas of specialty: 1) substance use, 2) trauma, and 3) relationship difficulties. My goal is to help you nonjudgmentally understand how you developed patterns that are not working for you now, and to use evidence-based strategies that will help you build better patterns. I will help you feel safe and supported discussing sensitive topics while also giving you the structure and accountability needed to make meaningful changes. I use approaches that have been shown to be effective through research.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
