Let’s be honest. Life gets real sometimes. Things happen and we can wind up feeling stuck, lost, or hopeless. To top it all off, we often feel pressured to put on a brave face and weather the storm. It’s for these reasons that I founded Sunshine Counseling. You deserve a space where you can be yourself, where you don’t have to hide, and where you can safely process life. Truth be told, I named my therapy practice after a mug my friend gave me which sarcastically declares, "I am a ray of freaking sunshine!" This cheeky little mug actually encapsulates my world view. It is not all sunshine and rainbows. And that's ok.

In the human experience, few emotions are more debilitating than shame. Maybe it’s the voice in your head beating you down at every turn. Maybe you find yourself stuck in past mistakes, or overwhelmed by everything that could go wrong in the future. Maybe experience has taught you to find yourself less-than in worth, relationship, and ability. When dealing with this kind of pain, vulnerability becomes unbelievably challenging, but incredibly healing.

Art Therapy what a fantastic way of communication. You don't have to be an artist; you just need to trust the process. Sometimes words cannot express what we want to say or think; through art, you can.

People are the expert on their own lives. As we work together to identify concerns and set goals, our work may include discussing behaviors, emotions, or thought patterns which do not serve the end goal and learning skills to manage or change them. I have experience and training to provide clinical support while someone navigates the changes they would like to see in their life. Wherever the person is in their need, that is where we will start.

You may not consider or believe that your life experiences include trauma. You might think, “Doesn’t everyone feel like this? This is just life, right?!” The answer is no! You don’t have to carry this yuck around with you anymore. You can have less inner conflict, better decision making, and enhanced self-control. Change is possible with EMDR therapy.

Hi, I'm Cait, a queer nonbinary counselor. I'm offering help to those who are feeling like they want to get to the root of some of the issues they are experiencing. Life is a difficult experience and I want to provide a space where you feel safe and comfortable enough to talk through the aspects of life that are challenging for you individually. Talking with a mental health specialist in an authentic and honest way can help you realize aspects about yourself, and in turn, help you see yourself more congruently. I will work to create that space for you so you can heal from past trauma and lead your life in a more grounded way.

I believe humans are incredibly resilient in times of stress, but even more so when acting toward personal change and growth. I also believe communication is a gift we all hold which can assist us in having more positive and fruitful lives. My role in working with individuals is to assist them in finding their voice, to feel more empowered during daily interactions, and to overall become their authentic selves. My goal is to offer individuals a safe space to come and talk about what they are thinking from day to day, to not feel alone with daily struggles, and to learn skills to better communicate with those most important to them.

Each person is on a unique life journey. I look forward to learning where you are on your journey and how I can help you create the life you desire. It is not about dwelling on the past but about using life lessons to move forward in a positive way. Even our most difficult life experiences bring us wisdom, character and integrity. If you are at a low point on your journey, therapy provides an opportunity to sort through the complexities, decrease the feeling of being overwhelmed and make real progress on your current life challenges.

How can I find a therapist in Grand Rapids?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
