Has your child's school told you they need to be tested? Have you been rejected for a job and need to be re-tested to demonstrate you actually do qualify? Has your therapy hit a dead end and your therapist needs diagnostic clarity to take you to the next level? My practice was designed to address each of these concerns and more. Testing and evaluation opens up doors to school services, better job opportunities, and in some cases, can help the courts better understand your side of situations. Together, we can use your testing results to help you navigate these systems even more effectively. Not offering therapy at this time.

We will be two experts working on your issue or problem: you are the expert on you (I can never know you as well as you know yourself) and I am the expert on hu man behavior and psychology.
I offer therapy & evaluation (testing) services for those 18+. Clients don't come to me because they are happy. They come, most likely, because they are in pain and hurt. They are tired of feeling stuck, and the fear, tears, and whatever seems to be causing them all. They aren’t interested in therapy because they want therapy. In fact, they are not even sure IF they want therapy—but they ARE sure they want to get unstuck and feel better. So, for you: here you are. . . not all that sure that this is going to help but damn sure you want to do something that might make a positive change and get your life moving forward again.

Together we will work as a team to unlock personal growth and change the way we view the world. My approach is to meet you where you are, operating from the viewpoint that individuals have within themselves vast resources for self-understanding and for altering their self-concepts, basic attitudes, and self-directed behavior; these resources can be tapped through providing an environment where repair and healing are the priority. With me, you can expect to receive empathy and unconditional positive regard no matter what you may be going through. We are here, together, to facilitate change.

I work on problems caused by symptoms or troubling persistent personality traits by helping clients obtain a more complete and honest picture of themselves. The increased self-knowledge and insight achieved within a supportive therapeutic relationship helps my clients make the changes they are seeking. Enhanced relationships, improved confidence, and the elimination of self-defeating behaviors are the product of the continued development and deepening of the therapeutic relationship.

I utilize a cognitive behavior approach to help clients gain a better understanding of the root cause of stress, anxiety, and/or depression while developing tools to manage symptoms.
Greetings! My name is Dennis Nelson, and I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the District of Columbia. I have over two decades of experience assisting individuals, families, and couples with managing the challenges of grief and loss, depression, anxiety, (layered) trauma, divorce, separation, personal relationships, and post-traumatic stress. Life can produce a series of transitions. Sometimes, we become stuck in an emotional or traumatic response and lose our sense of self. You are a unique expression of life itself. You are inherently valuable. It's time you live your life this way.

Men's mental health, and access for marginalized folks, including LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities, and clients with chronic health conditions are areas of particular expertise.
Hello! Thank you for visiting my page and for considering me for your mental health needs. I am a licensed clinical psychologist in DC and Virginia. Antiracist and identity-affirming practice is very important to me. I help clients navigate mood-related concerns (e.g., anxiety and depression), relationship issues, identity conflicts, and family of origin issues, among others. Seeking out mental health services requires courage and a desire to change. I try to honor this courage by working hard to be present, warm, and responsive every time we meet. Accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP) informs my work.

I specialize in providing individual psychotherapy to children and adolescents with a wide-range of emotional and behavioral difficulties. Although my expertise is with youth with mood disorders, including anxiety and depression, I also have extensive experience with youth with social and behavioral struggles. My approach is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in focus, as it is best supported by research, children and adolescents respond to it very positively, and because I have found it to produce immediate and long-lasting improvements in functioning.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
