There is no shame in being fully alive; it's part of the hu man condition to struggle.
We're all just trying to make sense of this thing called life. Some of us are empowered while others struggle. No matter where you might find yourself on this continuum, I can help you. Whether we explore what it means to be more fully actualized or simply craft a space for you to catch your breath during a particular challenging time in your life, I aim to support and walk with you through whatever you present with. It takes courage and ego-strength to know when you want help. Let me be among the first to congratulate and assist you.

I discovered in my earlier career as an instructor of college-level hu manities that certain kinds of relationships, ones that involve a welcoming responsiveness to the entire person, can lead to greater growth.
I understand that the risk and vulnerability involved in therapy can make it an intimidating process, a stress added on to whatever is already going on in a person’s life. People can feel like opening up to another person will make them lose control of whatever security they have created for themselves. I try to use simple, direct language to speak with people about their problems and experiences. Talk therapy gives us the chance to gently address these concerns while developing the kind of relationship that leads to growth.

Grief, loss, and change challenge us to renegotiate – in our bodies, in our thoughts – earlier and similar transformations in our lives, stirring up difficult emotions, thoughts, images, and bodily experiences. In our work together, I will attend with integrity to whatever expressions of body, mind, and heart that arise. In this work that requires patience of us both, I will help you to discover and connect the elements of your own unconscious, history, desires, associations, leading to a genuine – even transformative – development of your own psychological, spiritual, and embodied personal narrative.

I believe therapy offers a unique and powerful framework for understanding the complexities of hu man behaviors and mental health.
My practice is dedicated to fostering a secure, empathetic, and nonjudgmental environment. It is a space where patients can feel comfortable and secure as they explore their inner worlds. Throughout my clinical training, I worked with patients from different age groups, communities, and cultures outside of the US. I am interested in working with adults from different culture backgrounds as well as the LGBTQ2SIA+ community.

The willingness to examine oneself—with honesty, curiosity, wonder, but also ambivalence and doubt—might be one of the bravest achievements of any hu man life. Acknowledging and respecting that courage in clients is my first sacred duty as a therapist. From there, we talk. We explore the unconscious dynamics of your life. We work together on getting un-stuck, grasping the multiple ways we can live with others on this beautiful yet fragile world, and building something new for yourself and for future generations.

Hello, I'm Dr. Chris Chroniak. For 38 years I have assisted individuals struggling with depression, stress and anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, divorce, OCD, a relationship or lack of one, as well as numerous other psychological and emotional issues. I begin therapy by developing a warm and genuine relationship with my client. We then work together to explore and work through the underlying issues that block growth and cause pain or discomfort. I also teach my clients practical and effective tools that help them deal with painful and troubling thoughts and feelings, as they occur, moment by moment.

One constant in life is change. Circumstances, relationships, and we ourselves can change radically over time. New challenges may stir up old emotions, ones that we thought we have left behind in the past. You may be struggling with a repeated sense of dissatisfaction in certain areas of life, whether it be relationship struggles, an emotional block, or a pervasive sense that something is missing. Different problems can be approached individually or relationally, and I work with individuals (child play therapy, adolescents, & adults), couples, and families to meet these problems from different angles.

I am a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst on the faculty of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and I welcome individual adults whom are questioning why their attempts to improve the quality of their life is not working. A questioning individual suggests to me a person whom wants to change and live more creatively. Often there can be mixed feelings about change. I recognize that change is difficult. I feel that self exploration is a challenging enterprise that often requires courage and risk. I would like to help you understand why your best efforts have not worked.

Therapy can be a place to confront difficult feelings, memories, and experiences, which occurred in the past and how they can come up in the present. Therapy provides a non-judgmental, curious space in which we can explore your feelings and thoughts in ways that can be difficult to do in the fast-paced, 'outside' world.

My philosophy in working with clients is to build a trusting relationship with them by learning about their story - their family's story, their personal story, their triumphs and their challenges. I then work with the client to use their strengths to help them form a new story, a story where they change ingrained habits and live the life they have always wanted to live. I like to use the relationship we have built together to help the client feel safe making these changes in a supported environment.

Psychological suffering can be debilitating to the point where people can become hopeless, but I believe psychoanalytic therapy presents a unique opportunity to deal with suffering. Through the process of therapy, I invite clients to speak the truth of their pain, life stories, and current problems. I will make sure to listen to these stories carefully in an empathic and culturally informed way. Together we will explore what is said, felt, and experienced. I strive to make the therapy space a place where you feel free to say what comes to mind and be authentic.

During life, you may feel sad, stressed, anxious, and you may repeat behavior patterns or establish unhealthy relationships. If you are going through something like this, going to therapy is the best opportunity for you to improve all that you believe is necessary. From my point of view, it is only through meeting with another hu man being that you can heal and be able to make transcendental changes. That is why within the therapy framework, I offer to create, to find, explore, and experiment with a unique space for each patient that will allow them to change and achieve personal and emotional growth.

Our work will be to uncover and understand how these early experiences manifest themselves in your daily life with empathy and compassion, with the hope of helping you find greater peace.
I offer supportive and exploratory talk therapy to those who wish to make significant change in their lives, but have difficulty knowing how to make this happen, or even with knowing what exactly it is they want for themselves. Perhaps you have found your way here because you're struggling to find intimacy in your close relationships. Perhaps you're feeling overwhelmed or confused by your own feelings. Or perhaps you're experiencing distressing symptoms like panic attacks, skin picking, or depression (to name just a few). It may help to have someone to talk to who can help you find greater clarity and understanding within yourself.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
