Despite most young girls displaying strong, inherent self-esteem, a natural decline occurs as they mature into adolescent years causing self-harming behaviors, eating disorders, and other detrimental behaviors.
Like a butterfly emerging into life, a child requires safety, care, and attunement. I believe in supporting child and adolescent emotional growth and developmental processes throughout the life cycle especially when hardships are faced, such as, trauma, bullying, anxiety, and other concerns. My approach is collaborative as I work closely with the parents, schools, and other collaterals involved to enhance over all well-being in every capacity of the child's environment. Always stemming from a strength-based perspective, using Play and Expressive Art Therapies, Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapies, and Somatic Experiencing.

My Masters is in school and community counseling (ADHD,autism spectrum, self abuse issues of cutting/eating disorders, social anxiety).
I have been working with families who are in crisis ( children with behavioral issues and teens who have trouble functioning). I have extensive experience with substance abuse (heroin, pills, and alcohol) issues, that have been affecting teens/parents. I can help parents and couples, dealing with relationship problems-many times tantruming children or depressed/anxious teens are a factor. Working with the entire family, or just the individual is my specialty. I have experience working with children who have trauma history, ADHD, anxiety or depression. I am able to assist parents in deciphering the IEP/504 options, if needed.

I listen closely to each client to know where to begin and how to proceed. In my work with children, this means being attentive to family history, inter-generational conflicts, and close work with caregivers. I use play and art therapy to help children find words for their experiences. I work flexibly with adolescents and emerging adults who may be struggling with their identities and relationships. Whatever age you are, my goal is to help you "say everything" and recognize your desire.

Life can often times make us feel like a crab without a shell, being thrown around by the waves into the rocks of the jetty. For many of us, there was never a "before" period - rather, the struggle has been all one has known. Individuals born into dysfunctional family systems often find that vulnerabilities from childhood not only fail to leave us as we become adults, but often make frequent and unwelcome appearances in the form of insecurity, shame, misplaced guilt and difficulty in relationships, to name a few.

Do you feel lost? Do you sometimes stop, look around, and ask yourself, "How did I get here?" You are not alone. We were all born into a far from perfect world left to navigate our course with less than adequate directions. Perhaps you have faced particularly stormy weather in your journey, or perhaps you have just been overwhelmed by the sheer weight of life's complications. Forging ahead, you have experienced your share of successes and disappointments, but you have never felt that you were exactly on the right track.

The therapy journey can be hard. Working towards your own personal evolution and transformation can be scary. I personally have worked with countless professionals who made me feel like this journey was going to be impossible and hopeless, and it's for this reason that I know how deeply you need a guide you can trust, someone who will walk with you through this experience every step of the way and make it as simple as possible. At the end of the day, the person that can help you the most is the person you feel most connected to; the person you feel safe sharing with. My intention is to be that person for you.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
