Looking for a therapist can be overwhelming. My hope is that this will give you an idea of who I am and what it might be like for us to sit together. I have been a therapist for 21 years. What is important to you is important to me. Each session is tailored to your needs. Sometimes you may want more structure or feedback. Sometimes you might just need someone to listen, to witness your pain, and know you were heard. That is how I see my role: to be a human being sitting with another human being offering emotional help, support, & insights. You're not going through this alone.

As a somatic therapist, I’m trained to help you regulate your nervous system, work through trauma, and learn to process your feelings. Somatic experiencing is for people who have either been in therapy before and feel like they’re "talked out,” or who are new to therapy and want to try a more mind-body approach. This work is powerful and I’m so honored I get to share it with you and help you get to a more regulated place in your life.

Do you live with chronic pain or other symptoms? I personally understand how scary and frustrating this is.
I am a pain reprocessing coach, educator, and group facilitator based in the Boston area. The Sage Practice LLC is my private coaching practice, where I work with clients both individually and in groups. What's fun about working via Zoom is my clients come to me from all across the world. As a former sociology professor, I think of coaching as a form of teaching (which I did for almost 20 years prior to moving into this). I teach clients evidence-based strategies so they can learn to calm their own nervous system, which in turn can help calm their symptoms. I offer free resources on my website and my teachings on the Curable app.

Hello, I enjoy working with individuals, couples and families I specialize in treating anxiety and depression. I have experience working with LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. I also enjoy working with teenage and younger clients. I see many people who are going through life transitions. When one is going through grief and loss, education challenges, relationship difficulties, a new family member, pain or illness, it can be particularly difficult to cope and particularly beneficial to be in therapy to work through these issues with an unbiased ear. I also specialize in working with individuals who have struggles with chronic pain.

Although my primary clinical focus is in the treatment of eating disorders with a sub-specialty in trauma treatment; I also work with many other co-morbid symptoms and diagnoses such as depression/anxiety, negative body image, grief/loss, anger management, and chronic pain or illness.
It takes courage and self awareness to seek support for your stress, and I'm continually honored by the individuals I serve in my practice for their willingness to open up to me. I strive to create a welcoming, non-judgmental environment that can enhance the process of therapeutic change. All people find themselves "stuck" at times, and through empathy and validation I work to create a path towards hope and healing for my clients.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
