I blend alternative therapeutic models with the latest research in epigenetics, insights from ancient spiritual traditions, wisdom from earth-based living, and embodied rituals to create processes that shift your relationship to suffering, sorrow, or emotional challenges and open you into deeper connection with your true self and harmony with life. I am affirming of LGBTQ+, poly/ENM, and kink identities. I use anti-oppression, anti-racist, ecopsychology & trauma-informed frameworks to support individual and collective liberation.

I have been in clinical private practice for 46 years, working with both couples and individuals.
Although conflict is inevitable in all intimate relationships, problems that continue to spiral out of control are not. The key to interrupting this painful cycle is learning to communicate as allies to work through the conflict and return to intimate connection. While couples are aware of the importance of communication, we are often unable to implement effective skills. Imago Therapy provides a unique way to communicate that enables you to understand and validate your partner's reality and truth of what happened, even when yours is different. This ends the draining and defeating battles over whose perception of reality is right.

I am a clinical therapist who uses narrative psychotherapy as a model to treat and process trauma, grief, and relational issues. I work with adults and older adolescents, as well as couples, and use a person-centered eclectic framework with my clients. I have been trained in AASECT sex therapy and encourage any individual, couple, or those engaged in non-traditional relationships to explore sex-related concerns in their work with me. In every aspect of my practice, I use an individualized approach with the client to build a treatment perspective that is specific to their own interests, values, and recovery.

What if your anxiety, depression, or relationship challenges are portals to your transformation and healing? In our work together, I can offer heartfelt support from a holistic perspective. As we welcome your present challenges and untangle your past hurts, we hold an awareness of your True Self, which is already whole and wise. This True Self is often buried beneath social conditioning, unexpressed feelings, painful memories, or false beliefs about yourself and the world. We can bring awareness to these subconscious blocks so that you can understand, question, and ultimately release them.

I have extensive experience working with couples, both heterosexual and same-sex, with individuals who have experience with therapy, and with adults who have questions about the benefits of therapy.
My approach to therapy is not limited to any one direction or technique. I work to stay open to and curious about each person's unfolding story. I listen closely to nuance and I look for underlying patterns, towards understanding what keeps people stuck. I am comfortable working with great adversity and extreme pain.

At the heart we all long for feelings of closeness, care and connection with our partner. When we experience these feelings we are able to relax in the field of that closeness through life’s challenges and joys. The days feel easier, softer, more manageable. Naturally, relationships go through difficult times, but it can be tough when we get caught up in negative emotional cycles with our partner. When we feel our needs don't matter, or that no matter what we do we just can’t get it right, frustration and anger can dominate. This can lead to us to lash out or pull away, creating even more distance just when we long to feel close!

I trained at the Northampton Center for Couples Therapy and have completed post-graduate training in multiple relationship models.
I support individuals and couples in understanding negative patterns of relating and developing more adaptive coping strategies to manage life's stressors. I do so using an eclectic approach that is carefully considered in collaboration with each client. I use the therapeutic relationship as a primary tool to help clients understand dynamics in relationships outside of therapy. I strive to create an environment that allows for levity, humor, and playfulness as we work together to make sense of your problems and overcome them. I work hard with my clients, and I enjoy engaging with clients who show up ready to work.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
