We all have moments of being stuck, often because of difficult events from the past or unhelpful ways of seeing blocking us in the present. When this happens, we can feel depressed, anxious, and disempowered. Being seen in a compassionate relational space supports us in finding ways to make our lives more workable. We are able to align with our deepest values, and unhook from the stories that limit our capacity to live from a place of deeper self-wisdom and purpose.

Research shows that who you choose to work with is the greatest indicator of success, so choosing the right therapist is the first step. Therapy can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Are you going through a major life transition and feeling overwhelmed? Feeling depressed? Wondering how to make your relationship work, or how to find a relationship model that will be healthy for you? Are you going through perimenopause/menopause or a mid life/sexual review? Experiencing anxiety that seems disproportionate to your life circumstances?

I work by deeply listening to each person and witnessing with compassion their struggles and triumphs. If you struggle with emotional anguish, are working to heal from trauma, experiencing extreme states or are seeking personal development, I take a strength-based approach. We will work together to form a trusting relationship within which to process difficulty, understand your struggles, regain connection within yourself, your relationships and create meaning to move forward.

Life can bring various stress and challenges, and our growth may be bumpier than we would like. Therapy can offer a space to step outside of your physically and mentally busy life to focus on yourself and important interpersonal relationships. As an Asian therapist in the U.S., I see many Asian and Asian American clients and enjoy working with people from various cultural backgrounds. Issues around cultural adjustment and identities are often addressed in therapy. I also assist racial/cultural couples in identifying and communicating about their cultural differences.

You may feel overwhelmed by anxiety, self doubt, or emotions that are hard to manage. Perhaps you are navigating a life transition, carrying old hurts, or feeling the weight of depression or trauma. You may be used to putting pressure on yourself or caring for others while your own needs go unmet. Deep down, you want calm, confidence, and connection. You want relief from self criticism and a clearer sense of direction. Therapy offers space to slow down, understand yourself, and make meaningful change. I help clients build balance, self compassion, and a stronger sense of possibility.

I am an institute trained psychotherapist, working integratively, within a contemporary, relational, psychodynamic orientation. After more than two decades of practicing in New York City, I am now located in Western Massachusetts and remain licensed in NY and also VT. For me, at the heart of a relational, psychodynamic, approach is my effort to strive to meet people where they are and make the work understandable and accessible based on who you are. I respect and build upon the ways in which I am invited to join and help expand psychic space, so that areas which are troubling can be demystified, transformed and feel less daunting.

With more than forty years of clinical experience, I offer psychotherapy for adults who want more than symptom relief—they want understanding, integration, and real transformation. My work is grounded in psychodynamic and relational therapy, an approach that explores how early experiences, emotional patterns, and relationships shape who we are today. Clients often seek therapy with me during periods of transition or reflection, including: • Life stage changes and aging • Relationship struggles or loss • Identity questions • Ongoing anxiety or depression • A desire for greater authenticity and emotional depth

I view all aspects of human sexuality as normal. I believe there is no wrong way to have a body. I view gender as a spectrum. I believe that neurodiversity makes the world a richer place. I view pleasure as a human right. In addition to offering regular weekly therapy sessions, I also offer in-person weekend intensives for individuals and couples, as well as longer EMDR sessions. These can often result in faster change and better outcomes.

I support women in transition (e.g., identity shifts, caregiving seasons, grief, perimenopause, career changes) who feel anxious, stuck, or overwhelmed. Therapy with me is a steady place to slow down, come back into your body, and find your next right steps. Together we’ll work toward concrete changes: less people pleasing, less anxiety spiraling, clearer boundaries, and a stronger sense of self-trust. We’ll move at a pace that feels supportive and sustainable.

Life is hard when there is too much unhappiness, worry, anger or frustration. I have been psychotherapist since 1994 and have a deep respect for the process of growth and change that individuals and families can accomplish. I treat children, adolescents and adults who are stuck in patterns that keep them from feeling happy, peaceful and healthy. If you are interested in listening to the way I think about therapy, here is a link to my podcast: www.theartoflistening.me/episodes/sarah-abel

My approach to therapy is not limited to any one direction or technique. I work to stay open to and curious about each person's unfolding story. I listen closely to nuance and I look for underlying patterns, towards understanding what keeps people stuck. I am comfortable working with great adversity and extreme pain.

My clients are typically between the ages of 18 - 35, navigating college or the beginning of their professional career. They often experience immense pressure around expectations they have set for themselves or someone else has set for them. They may experience anxiety or depression and are eager to explore coping skills and treatment options. They are interested in identifying the ways in which their relationships, responsibilities, family culture and current life stage plays a role in how they function in the world around them.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
