I’m a psychotherapist and EMDR Practitioner based in Philadelphia. I help adults from all over the US heal from trauma using talk therapy, EMDR therapy and healing intensives. If you’ve experienced trauma, you’ll know just how much hold it can have over your life. Daily flashbacks, isolation, anxiety, nervousness, nightmares, and insomnia can bring life to a halt. Using EMDR, I've seen amazing results with my clients.

I tend to work with individuals who have challenges and curiosities related to self and identity, unconscious internal conflicts and defenses, attachment and relationships, and how one's past and social location shape the present. I am relationally grounded, attachment focused and trauma centered; I believe that understanding and healing occurs in the context of our relationships, and therapy at its core is the building and deepening of a relationship.

Mental health difficulties often arise in the context of an absence of close interpersonal relationships. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, trauma, and severe, persistent mental illness can be successfully treated through improvements in one’s capacity to develop and maintain adaptive, healthy interpersonal connections and engagement in meaningful and enjoyable activities. I have more than 36 years practicing clinical psychology. I retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs on May 31, 2022 and I'm now expanding my private practice. Flexible schedule. I'm available for both teletherapy and in-office session. Lots of free parking.

My therapeutic work supports each person to feel whole, regardless of emotional issues, difficult or traumatic life experiences, and physical injuries or illness. Among other areas, I have experience in trauma, depression, anxiety, handling life changes, and parenting struggles.
Please note: I can't take insurance but I have a sliding scale - we will figure something out! - - Everyone has their own strengths and needs, children and adults alike. Sometimes the needs are overwhelming and the strengths are hard to find. Those are times when it helps to have someone who will listen, understand, support, validate, encourage, and help. I believe it's important to honor all emotions as valid and all needs as real. I also believe those needs don't have to define who you are, and that recognizing and accepting something as real - a loss, a child's behaviors - opens the way to start making positive changes.

Some of the issues I have supported clients with include trauma, grief, depression, anxiety, relationships and issues relating to gender and sexuality.
Looking for a therapist can be challenging. For those looking for the first time, I'd like to offer some thoughts on finding one who's right for you. While credentials and experience have their place, at the end of the day the most important thing is fit. I encourage you to "go with your gut." Do a phone consult. Did they give you space to talk? Did you feel heard? Sometimes what we need is feeling supported by someone who "gets" us. Other times we grow from someone who is able to challenge us in just the right way.

I want to do so in a way that feels conducive to the nuances of you. We can work through barriers such as PTSD, lack of sleep, loss of pleasure, apathy, grief, shame, and interpersonal conflict. I want to help you break down your overwhelm and create a lifestyle that feels sustainable and cares for you. I believe that we have the ability to create, shape, and project feelings of safety, happiness, and joy.

I come to private practice with a background in trauma, attachment, development, and identity, including an ongoing affiliation with the Cutchins Children’s Clinic. As a therapist, I partner with you to make sense of your story. Through this work, we often discover together that what’s happening for you in the present makes perfect sense given what you’ve lived through so far and the forces that have shaped you. With this understanding, you can more easily access softness toward yourself and others, and even find other ways of being.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
