Through a combination of strengths-based, solutions-focused, and interpersonal therapeutic style, I help people build awareness around painful emotions, insight around current needs, and clarify the values that drive action.
Connection is at the core of who we are, what we’re passionate about, and the most meaningful relationships we have. And yet so many things can interfere with our ability to connect: anxiety, depression, grief, traumatic experiences...how we cope with these things may inhibit our ability to build intimacy with those around us. I work with students and young adults, as well as those in mid-life and beyond, who experience anxiety, depression, relationship issues, or life transitions, that interfere with living fully you, fully now.

The decision to seek help is the first step in creating the life you have always envisioned. Although difficult and often overwhelming, seeking support for the complexity of life's issues has the power to change your life for the better. My goal is to help you achieve your personal goals and create a life that is worth celebrating. Collaboratively, we will work to uncover unhealthy patterns and explore deep rooted issues that may be preventing you from experiencing a more fulfilling, peaceful, and meaningful life.

Deciding to pursue therapy for your child, teen, yourself, or your family is a difficult yet rewarding decision. It is not often that we give ourselves the time and attention to focus on our feelings, frustrations and desires, but doing so can change our perceptions of ourselves and the world around us. My theoretical orientation integrates Mindfulness and solution-focused therapy with cognitive behavioral interventions that will reduce stress immediately.

I value opportunities to connect with my clients in unique and creative ways through humor, a love of animals, art, and connecting with nature. Through art, writing, and creative outlets I believe we can heal, and work towards integrating the broken parts of self. My approach to the therapeutic process is collaborative and goal-driven. I see my role in clients' lives as one that is temporary; my goal is to equip you with the tools, insights, and renewed hope that will allow you to move forward without need for my help.

It's important to find a therapist with whom you can connect and feel safe. With empathy and compassion, my focus is to creat a safe environment so that you are able to share that which is most vulnerable and I hold the space, a positive attitude, that focuses on your ability to grow and heal. Whether you come as a family, couple, individual, my goal is to help you to get past the stuck places, learn new skills, help you connect with your feelings with more depth and help you to make the changes that will enrich your life.

I believe in the fundamental, basic goodness of all humans; when living from a place of depth there can be a gentleness, ease, and gratitude toward ourselves, life, and everything we do. Nature teaches us that stress and healing are cyclical. That they are an integral part of our experience. Yet sometimes we get stuck and life can feel heavy, overwhelming and dark. During these times, we might need others to support us. To guide us in finding new ways of relating to ourselves as well as these stressful and contracted states. Psychotherapy can offer that help.

Sadness, grief and worry are normal human experiences. However, when they endure for long periods of time or when you are overwhelmed by the effects of stress or trauma, if you have difficulty sleeping or concentrating or you feel hopeless or helpless, then it may be time to visit a skilled therapist.

Psychotherapy can be an opportunity for self reflection, growth and healing. When life seems to be stagnant, painful or overwhelming, a therapist can offer solace, guidance and a container for the psychological process. I have spent over 20 years accompanying others on the journey through healing and have found that a deep connection to ones own soul can offer a road to a life of meaning and wholeness. I seek to offer safety and curiosity as we work through whatever is causing pain and struggle in the life of the clients I treat.

Helping children, teens, and adults develop the capacity to live full, healthy lives is my focus. I bring warmth, openness, and a whole-person, collaborative approach to support individuals, as they work through their challenges and create tools to move forward and thrive. "Therapy can be a place where the wonder and awe of self discovery can culminate in personal clarity, empowerment and promote a richer more fulfilling life. Living with past and present wounds, dealing with depression, anxiety, anger or addictions, or working through difficult relationships and life transitions, our lives may seem out of control when our emotions and our thinking are out of balance. As your counselor I will help you by gently guiding you in finding that balance by creating a safe and supportive environment as you develop skills to regain your mentally healthy life."

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
