I am currently accepting new clients. Depression, anxiety, divorce, men's Issues, addictions, couples counseling, anxiety, and codependency are my specialties. As a husband, father of four in a blended family, and grandfather of four active grandchildren, I understand how stressful life can be. Sometimes it seems like you have tried everything and you still can't seem to find the strength to make it one more day. Just when you think you have a few things figured out, people change, you get a new boss, your children begin struggling in school or you may discover something new about yourself that seems to make matters worse.

Gestalt incorporates evidence-based approaches (Mindfulness, Polyvagal, guided imagery & co-regulation) so you can tell your truth without fear/shame.
After 27 years of working in the mental health field, in 3 different countries, I have an appreciation for the fact that life rarely goes according to plan. Perhaps you’re struggling with feeling anxious, depressed, or unfulfilled with some part of your life, or you find yourself longing for deeper, more meaningful relationships. Have you lived through traumatic events (whether recent or long ago) that have changed you in ways you don’t understand, caused you to react unpredictably...made you feel like a stranger to yourself, & you’re struggling to cope? I believe in meeting you where you're at, with compassion, & without judgment.

Outside of EMDR, I would use mindfulness and skills-based therapy.
My ideal client is anyone who genuinely wants help and genuinely wants to make a change. Their issues are immaterial.

During therapy sessions, I draw from my training in adaptive information processing (EMDR), person-centered counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based techniques to meet my client’s needs.
Connecting with a therapist can feel intimidating: opening up to anyone can make us feel vulnerable, especially when the things we feel we need to talk about most are also the most painful. Choosing a counselor with experience can help make this process easier. In my more than 20 years experience as a therapist, I’ve found that allowing clients to test the waters, and build a rapport with me is important before diving into painful experiences. During this initial phase, we’ll identify strategies to help reduce symptoms. Some clients feel this is all they need; others choose to further explore their potential for growth.

I believe that every client is unique; therefore, I try to tailor my counseling approach to meet the needs of each individual with a focus on cognitive behavioral, person-centered, strengths-based, and mindfulness-based approaches.
We are all on a journey in life, and every part is just a piece of the bigger puzzle. We all encounter good times, bad times, challenges, learning moments, and more that help shape us into the human beings we are today. I desire to create a safe and welcoming environment where every individual can discover the pieces of their own puzzle. Everyone deserves a chance to be heard and allowed to grow and mature as a whole person (mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually).

My therapeutic style is grounded in evidence-based practices, such as cognitive-behavior therapy, mindfulness, solution-focused brief therapy, & the matrix model.
I specialize in helping those with anxiety, depression, & relationship issues. Whether it is a relational, work, school, or family issue, talking about it with someone often aids in clarity and change. I want to help those individuals/families who are struggling to make sense of the chaos, look for understanding insight, and make those changes that will help them to start feeling more hopeful and excited about life again.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
