I have experience working in various mental health settings, providing psychotherapy as well as early childhood intervention and crisis intervention. I have and continue to pursue training in the impacts of trauma and loss as well as depth oriented psychotherapy. Furthermore, I am a trained yoga instructor and offer options to integrate traditional psychotherapy with body awareness when relevant. However, I also believe in working collaboratively with the client to create a therapy plan that works best for the individual.

I have significant experience helping people cope with depression, grief and loss, adjustment and transition, and other life challenges.
I recognize and have a deep respect for the positive impact counseling can have on one's life. Having an impartial third party provide support and help one cope with any number of life's challenges can be invaluable. I believe the best therapists listen without judging and never dismiss or minimize rational or irrational fears as issues that adults "shouldn't" worry about. I practice an eclectic mix of theoretical approaches to empathically help individuals develop personal strengths and improve their self-awareness. My approach is collaborative, supportive, practical, and focuses on personal effectiveness.

I believe therapy is a place for self-exploration and building awareness of what is holding you back from leading a more fulfilling life. Whether you have suffered a recent loss or trauma, are suffering with painful emotions or having trouble coping with a life transition, therapy is a place to be heard and supported as you navigate the difficult path towards healing. I utilize an integrative approach to therapy, pulling predominately from relational and interpersonal theories, while incorporating motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral interventions when appropriate.

As a psychotherapist, my role is to help facilitate and support you, the client, in discovering, processing, and most importantly, deciding if changing some strategies you have needed to implement in negotiating your life is a next step in your treatment. It can take time to identify influencing factors in the problems experienced in life. Through the development of a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship, we will identify issues, if not already clear to you, and take action in the therapeutic relationship itself to develop the relational, emotional, and or behavioral skills you determine need to be the focus of your treatment.

I am trained in perinatal mental health through Postpartum Support International and previously worked as a therapist in a hospital obstetrics setting, specializing in pregnancy (including loss/termination), fertility/infertility, the postpartum period, and parenting.
My therapeutic approach is client-centered, client-directed, and strengths-based. I strive to create a space that is free of judgment and a relationship built on trust. My work with clients is often present- and future-focused, building insight and self-efficacy so that clients feel empowered to prioritize their wellbeing and reach their goals. My style is eclectic, drawing on various modalities, but it is always full of empathy, compassion, curiosity, humor, authenticity, and respect. I have experience working with teens and adults in a variety of settings, including community-based mental health, hospitals, and schools.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
