Taking New Clients: Everyone has the essential ingredients for positive change. Individuals and couples who seek my support are in a difficult moment or intersection in life; seeking resolution between internal and external pressures; seeking satisfaction and harmony in relationships, identity, career, society, etc. I support clients who seek to deepen and broaden their perspective on who they are and who they want to become by examining self-limiting narratives, refining self-mastery, and cultivating self-compassion. BIPOC and multicultural clients often seek my support as well as those who want more from therapy than just insight.

My areas of specialty are working with adults, either as individuals or in couples, who are seeking clarity and understanding in their lives, either in new situations, in their relationships, or in patterns that seem to come up in spite of best efforts. My clients are curious and motivated people who are used to solving problems and find themselves in search of greater understanding and new ways of being. I work with compassion, humor, and support my client's in their own unique vision for their lives and how they define meaning and satisfaction.

For over 30 years, I've had the honor of assisting couples, families, and individuals of all ages, as they identify, clarify and find constructive coping strategies to deal with issues relating to anxiety, depression, grief, anger and relationships. As a Marriage & Family Therapist, I especially enjoy working on issues such as affair recovery, attachment disorders and phase-of-life challenges. Whether you are struggling with a relationship in your life, overwhelming anxiety, or some other problem, I would be honored to work with you. I prefer to work with those who have clear goal goals, and who are solution-focused.

Everyone is on a journey of personal development; making meaning of their lives and experiences. I consider people to be the experts in their lives, who, when supported, are able to follow their natural drive for self-actualization. All human experiences are a valuable part of the process of self-emergence. Even the greatest challenges can offer insight and fuel for a path forward. I seek to draw out clients' strengths and support the cultivation of their inner guide. People are neither sick nor well. Rather, we are all in process, with personal depths that want for exploration.

All families experience transitions, and even positive change can cause stress. I employ an eclectic approach with a strong emphasis on attachment, structural, and solution-focused family therapies. I work with young children and their caregivers to form secure attachments early on. This leads to more effective communication and problem solving patterns and a higher level of resilience down the road. My work tends to be short term and builds on the existing strengths of your family. My work with couples is attachment informed as we look at past and current relationships to elucidate our most fulfilling ways of connecting.

Please contact me for current availability. More info at robinbagai.com. My approach is to help build greater capacity for living life in these strange times. I offer respectful engagement with your circumstances and inner reality. I don't rush toward quick solutions, instead allowing your own pace unfold. I'm one who would gravitate toward your pain, rather than deflect or minimize it. Therapy is partly about engaging emotional suffering with the possibility of transforming it. It is also about growth of life and self. I aim for an appreciative understanding of each unique human being through collaborative goodwill efforts.

You are too hard on yourself, holding yourself to unrealistic standards. Others tell you you are “too sensitive” and “overly emotional,” or you hold your emotions in tightly to protect yourself. You feel stuck in your life and relationships, getting in your own way with the negative, self-defeating stories you tell yourself. I believe that people are inherently resilient. Using a supportive and empowering approach, I work with individuals to tap into their inner resources, learning new coping strategies and coming to better understanding themselves and their relationships in order to move forward and reach their full potential.

The willingness to seek support is a courageous step in acknowledging the strength of our vulnerability. Humans were meant to heal together. It is in relation with one another that we discover the necessary connection and compassion to heal past wounds and navigate the challenging circumstances of an unjust society. Unfortunately many of us are also hurt in relationships and struggle to feel safe with others or even know what safety looks like. Therefore, in our sessions we will work together to build a safe and compassionate environment where we can feel heard and seen as we move through our pain accompanied by another.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
