Initially, I want to know the strengths of your family as well as your concerns, how the the family handles challenges that all families encounter, areas where things are running smoothly, and areas that feel more difficult.
I see the family-centered approach as a critical component to recovery and healing for any individual struggling with mental health, traumatic experience or loss, as well as physical, developmental, or learning challenges. I work with families of any size and constellation, and I consider couples to be families. I work with married couples, cohabitating couples, LGBTQ+ couples, elderly couples, families with young or adult children, adoptive families, family members across one or more generations, families facing childrearing or geriatric issues, stepfamilies, and families facing medical or mental illness.

My experience includes working with families, individuals, and couples on a variety of topics such as behavioral issues, conflict management, and how trauma effects family systems and relationships.
Positive change is attainable, and it starts with building safe and healthy connections. My goal as a therapist is to start by taking time in learning what makes you unique and how you'd like to grow. I aim to provide a welcoming and strengths-focused atmosphere to assist in building on the skills that you already have as well as work together to add some new tools and strategies.

My interest in psychotherapy and the social work field is something that has just been a part of who I have always been. I feel as though this is a field that has more appropriately chosen me. I have always been drawn to helping people, whether it be a fellow member of the community such as helping to clean up after their house caught on fire, or merely a close friend or family member who simply was in need of some support. I am someone who not only provides support to my clients, but work along side of them through whatever challenges may come their way.

Waitlist for new clients
I do couples and family therapy and work with children, teenagers and adults.
"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves". A person, child or adult able to reflect and build on themselves will be able to do great things when they can seek guidance and help. Experience with suffering is a strength I see in my clients that has given them tools for growth that many others may lack. Someone who is in need of guidance, challenging, and strength building will be able to get their needs met from our sessions. Self care is hard, it's work, but with help this work can become much more manageable.

With twenty-five plus years of experience, I strive to create a therapeutic environment in which my clients can understand the causes of the problems they are experiencing and explore options for dealing with them. I believe each person has the right to determine their own journey in life and that people can make the decisions that are best for them when they are conscious of all the dynamics involved. Together, we will work to understand and consider the influences of family, social, and cultural contexts.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
