I utilize several modalities of psychology including CBT, Positive Psychology, Family Systems, and others.
Welcome! My name is Sara and am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have been in the field for more than a decade; licensed since 2020. I specialize in teens and young adults, but love working with adults of all ages. I work primarily with people who are struggling through adjustment to different phases of life and/or are experiencing anxiety and depression. I believe in person centered care where you are the expert in your own life, but firmly believe everyone could use a good support team. I feel fortunate to be part of that team.

It is important to talk through the different therapy strategies with a client to determine what suits them and meets their expectations of treatment. I like using different modalities of treatment (like Dialectical Behavioral Treatment, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, and Client-Centered Interventions) and feel it is important to educate the client on these options so they can decide on what will work well for them. Regardless of the treatment modality they choose, setting realistic treatment goals is so important and will allow clients to see change as they work through treatment.

I employ evidence-based treatment including CBT, DBT, ACT for body neutrality and family support.
I specialize in eating disorders, food/eating concerns, body image, and overexercise. I work with adolescents and adults of all genders and backgrounds, particularly with athletes and women. Constant focus on or worrying about your body, food, or eating is exhausting, and is a very common experience. I work with clients who desire to break free from the anxiety stemming from a hyper focus on body image, concerns about food and eating, and the control of the size or shape of their bodies. I specialize in the treatment of emotional eating, binge eating, "anorexia athletica" and relative energy deficiency in sports, and "orthorexia".

Thank you for taking the time to seek counseling for yourself or your family. I know it is not easy to seek help from someone you do not know. I have been told I have a direct approach to assist in getting through painful memories at a gentle pace. I believe old pains can be healed if allowed to be shared, explored, and understood. For appointments, I have daytime and some evening appointments and use text alerts for appointment reminders. I offer both in-person and telehealth sessions.

The mission of Starfish Family Counseling, PLLC, is best described through a story. The Starfish Story tells of a child walking along a beach after a terrible storm which washed up thousands of starfish onto the beach. The child is throwing starfish back into the water, when someone admonishes the child that they cannot save them all, cannot really make a difference. The child responds by picking up another starfish and saying "it makes a difference to this one." Together we will explore your goals, strengths and most importantly that you, your child, your relationships deserve healing. You matter.

Using a personal, integrated approach I would be honored to meet with you, your child or family to create a treatment plan that would draw from my knowledge of "parts" work, play therapy, a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the interventions named above and others.
Pain. It finds us. Whether it's the result of the loss of love, health, or security, pain finds us, and it can be overwhelming. Licensed in Illinois and Missouri, I offer support to hurting children, adults, and families by providing emotional safety, sharing compassion, and helping my clients to learn and apply new skills as needed. Passionate about issues that have resulted from attachment and relational wounding I have specialized in treating issues of attachment and trauma.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
