The most rewarding and fulfilling times in our lives are the times when we feel respected, connected and heard. Often, we feel that our efforts fall short or we are just unable to communicate our desired intentions, either at work or in our personal or family relationships. Sometimes, we need the help of a professional therapist to improve our self-esteem, become more effective communicators or enhance our relationship dynamics. Ms. Benson specializes in helping her clients achieve understanding and mastery over their issues in a professional, comfortable and caring atmosphere.

As a Marriage and family therapist, I practice from an attachment lens.
Are you struggling in your relationship, constantly arguing, stuck in negative patterns that leave you and your partner living parallel lives? Do you feel stuck? Is depression and anxiety keeping you from living the life you want? Or maybe you’re struggling with your child’s behavior and big emotional meltdowns. You have tried everything and still feel like you’re failing. Relationships are the core of human experience. We are not designed to go through life alone. Therapy can provide you with support to learn, heal, grow, and make lasting changes for yourself and your most important relationships.

Family of origin issues processed so that they no longer interfere with adult lives.
I work with clients from age 12 to age 65. I prefer to work with one client at a time, but see two clients occasionally (parent/child or partners). I can accommodate three, but I am not a family therapist. I am a good listener, and am direct with questions.

I work with individuals who have been affected by a family member or friend struggling with substance abuse or who have experienced domestic abuse.
Are you experiencing difficulties within your relationship? Are you a loved one of a family member struggling with substance abuse and trying to find your place? I work with individuals and couples looking for a place to grow individually or to connect more in their relationships. I help my clients identify negative patterns, aiming to foster a relationship to help them feel less alone, lost, or frustrated with their current issues. My work is highly attachment-based, a framework that focuses on the impact of early relationships on an individual's emotional and psychological well-being and how that shows up in the present.

I use aspects of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT and EFIT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to walk alongside you as we explore patterns of reactions, what you believe about yourself, and how you experience other people.
The seasons of life can feel impossible to navigate alone. Sometimes it’s a lost feeling of disconnection from ourselves. Other times maybe it’s the grief of losing someone we love. Or perhaps it’s a relationship that fuels anxiety or distress. Whatever the reason, counseling is a space for us to explore and discover the tools you need to connect, heal, and grow in new ways. My framework in our work together is grounded in attachment science and the belief that connection to self and other is a basic tenant of human wellness. While leaning in can be terrifying, I'll be there every step of the way.

Therapy for anxiety, panic, OCD, and selective mutism for women and families - You feel like you can’t get out of your head. You try to distract yourself, but the “what if” worries won’t stop. You ask your friends and family if the worries are “logical”, and then realize you are asking the same question over and over again. Maybe you’re experiencing feelings of panic or other anxiety that stops you from being able to do the things you want to. You want to be more social, but you go blank when you are in a new situation. You can't stop putting pressure on yourself to be "productive" which often leads to more worries.

Are you someone who has a hard time feeling connected with others or you’ve noticed your teen is struggling to connect with you, their friends, family, and even with themselves. Maybe you’re concerned they’re harming themselves, using drugs, or engaging in risky behaviors. They may seem like they don’t have any hope or any goals and like their self-confidence is low. You’re worried about what their future will hold. Maybe you are worried about having difficulties of your own.

It is extremely challenging to see a loved one feeling confused or struggling with intense feelings of pain, sadness or worry. While it’s normal to experience a range of emotions, especially during transitional periods like adolescence, it’s crucial to create a safe space to feel understood and supported as they navigate the complexities of being a teenager. Your concern and desire to support them are incredibly important steps in their journey towards understanding and well-being. I'm here to join you on this journey, offering a compassionate and tailored approach to help you and your family build skills and renew connection.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
