Welcome! My name is Hannah, and I believe that every individual deserves to be heard, affirmed, and supported as they work to build up skills to address the issues they are facing daily in their lives. Thank you for taking a minute to read my bio to see if I might be a good fit to come alongside you on your journey. I use a person-centered, trauma informed, multimodal approach to ensure each client is supported while identifying and working towards their goals. Along with this, I also believe it is important to understand the interconnectivity of cultural, historical, and social impacts and experiences within one’s life.

I enjoy my work as a psychotherapist even more today then I did when I started over 20 years ago. There is so much power and insight that comes from a truly authentic relationship between therapist and client. You, the client, can then take what is learned in the safety of the therapeutic relationship out into the world full of Other relationships and feel equipped to navigate them in a way that is aligned with who you are. Whether it's your self as a mother, daughter, brother, or son, there is meaning to unfold in everything you do.

Has life taken an unexpected turn that seems overwhelming or scary? Are you faced with worry about the new normal you find around you? Do you feel sadness, grief or loss for your "old" or "real" self? A serious illness, a significant change in body size or shape, a job loss, the death or illness of a child, spouse, or significant loved one can shake our sense of who we are, how we relate to our bodies, and how we fit in the world.

Accepting New Clients... Life can take us on an unexpected journey. Sometimes, that leaves us feeling out of control and overwhelmed. Do you find yourself wishing things could get “back to normal”? Feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression are normal when we’ve experienced trauma, loss, or even a major life transition, but difficult experiences don’t define who we are. I have worked with children and families in a variety of settings and have several years of experience working with children who have experienced trauma. I believe that healing is possible.

My goal in therapy is to create a safe space where you can be honest and real. It takes great courage to seek help. To heal, grow and thrive people need a truly non-judgmental space in which to explore strengths, weaknesses, fears, past, present, and hopes for the future. I am real, kind, honest, and trustworthy. My therapy practice is rooted in an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, harm-reduction, trauma-informed, relational and person centered approach. I aim to create a safe space for clients to explore their identities and build self-efficacy.

With 23 years of counseling experience, I have found my passion, working with people who have had a significant loss or are making a life changing transition. For the past 10 years I have worked exclusively with grieving people. I am a Certified Thanatologist from ADEC (Association of Death Education and Counseling) and a Grief Recovery Method Specialist. I have had the opportunity to witness post-traumatic growth through small intentional steps the client takes to facilitate adaptation and integration. Working to find strengths of each client in order to help healing through growth and acceptance.

New openings: 10am Monday (in-person, weekly recurring) and 3pm Tuesday (teletherapy only, weekly recurring). Waitlist available. I work with individuals & individuals of couples & particularly appreciate working with young adults & elder adults. Emphasis is on building self-efficacy, a positive psychology approach supported by CBT - not only navigating the impact of internal and external weaknesses but also building your strengths - what else is going to bail you when times get rough! And yes, it's OK to have weaknesses. No human is without. To say, "I have weakness," is not to say, "I am weak."

We’re all on a journey in this life. I believe we live our best lives when we pay attention to what we put into our mind, body, and soul, and also to what we put out through movement, service, and collaboration. Why live a less than amazing life when you can optimize your inputs and outputs to reach your full potential? I will come alongside you to listen, support, revisit what you long to get a hold of and work through, examine your priorities and goals, and provide support and evidenced-based recommendations for your health and wellness.

Starting therapy for the first time, or with someone new, can bring feelings of vulnerability. There’s no right or wrong way to start, or reasons needed to begin. I believe all people can benefit from therapy. After all, being a human is hard enough. With me, the process of coming to therapy is made simple through co-creating safety and trust. I provide space where people can be human, share their truth, explore identities + practice new learning. I’m accepting clients ages 5+ for in-person and ages 13+ for telehealth/in-person. Clients under 13 unable to do in-person are encouraged to start parent sessions with me to foster change.

It takes courage to ask for support. Coming this far is a victory in and of itself. You’re in touch with yourself enough to know that you need something to change, although you may not be certain yet of what that change should look like. Perhaps you need a shift in perspective during a difficult time. Maybe you need to learn to cope with challenging emotions. Perhaps it is your child who needs help and you need help learning how to help them. Whatever your need, you deserve an empathetic and dedicated guide to join you on your journey. You don't have to do this alone. Currently taking clients intermittently.

Simply put, being human is hard. When we experience loneliness, depression, fear, or disconnection, our relationships to others and to our true selves can become closed off, leaving us feeling isolated and in pain. In those moments of hardship there is immense power and courage in reaching out. Therapy can be a safe haven to process past experiences that have caused harm, address relationships that are in crisis, and find a way to reconcile loss. We can also use counseling to explore your values and how your life is lining up with those values, or missing the mark.

We live in a complicated and challenging society and then, we have ourselves to deal with. Therapy is a good way to understand yourself on a deeper level so you can grow to your full potential and change the things that need to be changed. By doing so, we not only heal ourselves, but we are then a benefit to others in our life and to the world in general. I think I can help with that no matter where you are in the process.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Bellingham?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
