As a recovering alcoholic and drug addict with 35 years of recovery, I enjoy working with other recovering individuals. I have a wide range of treatment therapy expertise to address co-existing issues that often complicate recovery. My professional experience started in 1988 as a substance abuse counselor intern in residential treatment, with later work in outpatient, hospital, criminal justice and military programs where I eventually became a Clinical Director. While I support 12 step recovery, I also offer alternative approaches that are individualized to more closely align with client desires and motivation.

Our resilient spirit helps us get through many difficulties and obstacles throughout our lives, but sometimes we come across something that can threaten to hurt us, hold us back or even keep us stuck. Engaging in the therapeutic process can help alleviate these feelings of overwhelmedness, hopelessness or fear.

Entering therapy can seem daunting, but it is one of the most empowering things we can do for ourselves. As a therapist, my goal is to help you gain insight that leads to positive change. I believe the self awareness you develop in therapy can be transformative and view my role as a guide to walk you through this journey of discovering your genuine self. My style is engaged and analytical, and I aim to offer a safe space that allows clients to give themselves the kindness and self compassion they deserve.

I have knowledge and practice of many prominent counseling theories and will adapt my counseling approach to your needs and goals. I tend to implement a solution-focused approach in order to not only focus in on what your goals are, but also to get you to those goals as quickly as possible. While we develop solutions for your goals, I tend to think outside of the box and try to find unique solutions that are catered to you individually.

Recovery can simultaneously be the most rewarding and demanding part of your life. It can leave you feeling exposed and raw at the end of the day even though your recovery has shown you are resilient. Recovery from alcohol and other substances involves daily hard work and at times can feel monotonous. Anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and other life struggles just seem to add to an already daunting process. The fear of relapsing into old habits and behaviors can be all-consuming and can cloud your reasons for exploring sobriety in the first place.

Reaching out can be so hard, but it is such an important first step! We are not made to do the hard things alone. More and more research has shown that we are deeply wired for connection and support. The most fundamental human need we have is for relationships. The most overlooked relationship is the one you have with yourself. Counseling is about moving towards healing and growth as we learn to trust ourselves. Your unconscious mind determines how you relate to yourself & to others. Science has shown us how adaptive our bodies and brains are as they change to manage the stress or trauma of our lived experiences.

Our lives are continually evolving and changing. We carry with us tools, strategies, behaviors and ways of coping with the variety of challenges, shifts and changes we experience, feel and encounter. Some of the ways in which we think about ourselves and interpret our experiences support us and work well for us, some did for a specific time and no longer do, and some of these thoughts/behaviors didn’t support us at all, are unkind, and we find ourselves acting against ourselves.

Congratulations on your journey towards healing and a full life. I invite you to learn a bit more about my practice and the path I have taken to join you. I strive to provide a safe environment for clients to become in touch with their agency, while experiencing difficult life situations. Most of my work is done in the context of the parent/child relationship, when working with young children and families. With individuals and couples, I allow clients to identify their inner strength and insight to foster personal growth, or develop deep meaningful relationships.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
