People seek therapy for many reasons. Perhaps you are in a crisis, confronting a life transition (divorce, retirement, death, illness, empty nest, new relationship), having difficulty coping with work stress, using/abusing substances, or "feeling stuck" and unable to make positive life changes. I believe that most of us have blind spots - emotional patterns or behaviors that can get in the way of our healing or fully exploring life’s challenges and opportunities. My role is to provide clinical insight and guidance that is collaborative and respectful, supporting your unique journey toward recovery and growth.

Accepting new clients as of 9/10/24...Are you looking for a therapist who hears what you’re saying, sees, and feels your issues? Many of us are looking for a therapist who is the right fit, understands the issues we’re bringing up, and can help us work through our challenges to feel better about ourselves. Mental health issues can be difficult to manage alone and having a supportive therapist can make all the difference.

If you’ve made it to this profile, you can take a deep breath and relax a little because you’ve taken the first step in your healing journey. If you've noticed you're more anxious than you'd like to be or more depressed than seems healthy to you, therapy can be a helpful way to let someone else provide guidance and help you navigate the difficult things life has thrown your way. Therapy can create space for you to work through the intrusive thoughts, feelings, and obsessions that are impacting your life.

As a systemic thinker, I am always looking at a person in relationship to their environment, and the people in it. With a strength-based approach in family therapy, I also use psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral principles, while providing a safe and empathic environment for our work together. I have treated families, couples and individuals for 16 years with a broad scope of culture, age and relational issues. I have helped many people through transitional events that affect them throughout their lives; school, career, marriage, parenting, illness, loss, divorce and retirement. My interest is in the relationship you have with yourself and those around you.

A common myth amongst law enforcement officers is that seeking mental health therapy will result in the loss of their weapons and job. This is NOT the case! As a retired police officer (25 years of service), I am familiar with and empathetic to the overwhelming pressures law enforcement officers endure. Active law enforcement officers, as well as retired officers, can maximize their overall well-being by accessing confidential assistance from someone who understands their personal and professional experiences.

Together, we will identify issues, unprocessed memories and experiences, dysfunctional patterns of behavior, maladaptive coping mechanisms, and other barriers that are preventing you from being where you want to be. We will start with where you are right now and work towards an overall improved sense of emotional well-being.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
