I also use techniques and tools from Motivational Interviewing and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
Hi, I'm William Lockhart, LPC. However, I go by Lee. I had sadistic parents who named me one thing and called me something else. I'm licensed in Alabama as an LPC. My license number is 2936. In my 16+ years of practice, I have worked with almost every type of client and an array of issues, though my primary focus has been on clients with substance use issues and mood disorders. I have a generally directive approach while fully respecting your right to choose and live your life as you see fit. I primarily work from a Cognitive Behavioral, Person-Centered, and Solution-Focused frame of reference.

Although I use an eclectic approach to counseling, treatment approaches primarily include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Board Certified-Telemental Health Provider with over fourteen years experience in mental health and substance use disorders. The initial session will consist of a detailed interview and assessment. My approach to therapy is to meet you, the client, where you are at the time. Together we will collaborate to devise a treatment plan based on your primary presenting problem and any secondary problems. All treatment plans are individualized to fit your particular goals for a more fulfilling life. Assessment is ongoing and goals of treatment may change.

My passion is to help you find the skills, provide support, and uncover the strength you will need to be successfully in life. My vision is to ensure an atmosphere that is safe and welcoming. Thank you for considering me as you embark on your new journey. Feel free to contact with me via phone or email with any questions.

I am a clinical social worker with 25 years of experience in helping clients improve their lives. I believe therapy should be goal-oriented and client-driven. I utilize a strengths-based approach that starts with what is strong rather than what is wrong. This strengths based approach stems from my belief that everyone can set and reach goals in their life. My training in social work lends itself to a holistic approach to helping people. Consequently, I seek to treat the whole person: mind, body and spirit. I primarily work with clients ages 14 and up to help individuals and families find solutions that work for them.

I am accepting NEW clients! I have felt like you feel...unworthy, sad, alone, hopeless. I have felt every feeling that has led you to be on this website reading this paragraph right now. BUT, I have also felt peace and freedom. The insecurities, the validation you seek from others, the minimizing yourself to protect others. These things are limiting your VOICE.

I found my love for Social Work later in life. I was a middle school and high school English teacher and found that I loved working with my students and helping them with their struggles. This motivated me to go back to school and get my Master's in Social Work. I have worked extensively in community mental health, with homeless individuals, veterans, and a multitude of other populations. I still currently work in the field with these populations along with providing therapy. I absolutely love what I do!

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
