I work best with adults and teens (ages 12 and older) who suffer depression, anxiety and troubles navigating life transitions.
Change is hard, especially when life takes a turn you don't expect. Together, we'll discover how to cope with the changes in your life, whether they were planned or unplanned. More than that, we'll work together to help you become a better person. Adversity helps define who we are - our strengths and challenges. Whether you find yourself in circumstances of your own making, or thrown into life's unexpected storms, we will find a way through it. You'll be surprised at the strength you have, and your capacity to grow into a better person for it.

Hi, I am Heather. I believe, that you were not created to live in trauma, anxiety, depression, anger, rejection, regret, guilt, shame, false hope and broken promises. You were designed for a purpose, to not just get through life, but to thrive in it! If you find yourself stuck, in a cycle of wanting to change, but not knowing how. I'm your gal. My goal is to give you space and encouragement to address your healing so that your places of brokenness can find hope. We can work together to take back your life, so you can do more than just get through each moment and day. You were made for more!

Never underestimate the power of your story and know that your voice matters!I believe that counseling is a process of telling ones story. I treat children, adolescents and adults facing anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, family conflict, peer relationships, self esteem, coping strategies and more. I specifically have worked with children through early adulthood and families for over 18 years. I believe we all have mental health and that our health is on a spectrum. Sometimes we need a little extra guidance, help and support. And I look forward to helping you with this!

8/28/24-Accepting New Clients. Your painful childhood trauma has left you feeling broken and isolated. As a woman who longs for freedom from the past, you struggle to find a way forward and build the life you desire. The constant tug-of-war between people-pleasing and living authentically is exhausting. You yearn for balance and healthy relationships, yet question what "healthy" truly means, especially when it was never modeled for you. You might even be curious about EMDR therapy, wondering if it could be the key to unlocking the healing you’ve been searching for.

I believe all people possess the courage and strength to overcome life's obstacles. I believe with the right mindset and mental health foundation, change is attainable. Is therapy something you have thought about or tried in the past? There are many factors that bring people into therapy; however, one consistent theme seems to persist throughout; the want to learn about or change one's self. I believe I can assist people with this transition in life. I feel that my empathetic and compassionate approach make it easy for people to connect with me and help build a strong therapeutic alliance.

My practice focuses on trauma, eating disorders and life transitions; while also working with more general presentations of anxiety, depression, mood swings, impulsivity, grief and loss, emotional regulation, and self-view.
As we navigate our lives, we develop beliefs about ourself through our experiences. These beliefs have powerful effects on our sense of belonging, our attempts to receive love and affection, and our desires for intimacy. Feeling accepted and valued can result in a sense of self that approaches life with trust, confidence and flexibility. When difficult events arise, or we feel rejected and mistreated, the way we view ourself and our efficacy can be impacted. While we cannot change the experiences of our life, we can rewrite the meaning we assign to those experiences and free ourself from the associated distress.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
