I also work to incorporate language and interventions that are culturally sensitive and inclusive of race, gender, age, ethnicity and sexuality.
As an individual, whom has also dismantled her own shame concerning past relational patterns; I wish to ensure that the individuals I interact with feel seen in theirs; without judgement. Along with feeling validated when going through the overwhelming process of grief, that accompanies change/growth. My intent is never to tell you your story, but rather help you find your emotional language to express it at your comfort. Rather than being your voice, I wish to help you find yours. Which may look unique for each person, and incorporate other mediums such as art or music; as opposed to just words.

I lean into a decolonized and relational approach to the work we do together. My hope is to better understand these dynamics alongside with you and assist you to understand how to overcome the stressors and barriers attached.

Moving intentionally in the direction of change isn't always as straight-forward as we would like. You, your child, or your family may be facing a period of difficulty and struggling with coping, connection, and the way forward. My role is to assist by walking alongside you and guiding you and your family in seeing things that may be too overwhelming to face alone. It's a crap shoot trying to choose a therapist, and you’ve been through this before. You've gone to therapy but felt like the counselor didn't get you, or you're looking for more depth and a different perspective to address low mood, anxiety, self image, grief, boundaries, relationship with food and your body, or life transitions and transformations. Maybe you're wondering why relationships feel unsatisfying and you'd like to cultivate more pleasurable experiences and interactions. Perhaps you’re seeking a sense of alignment and cohesiveness between thoughts and feelings.

Life will inevitably bring us highs and lows. Somedays we may feel great and like we're on top of the world. Other times we may feel like everything is very difficult. Sometimes, we might not even know exactly how we feel. All the while, I believe most of us are trying to find fulfillment and peace amidst all of the challenges, joys and curveballs life throws our way. The good news is we do not have to face this journey on our own. Therapy can be a space to process, share, and examine the impact our experiences have on us. It can also facilitate a deeper connection with ourselves and potentially even others.

It takes courage to try something new when the old ways of navigating emotional landscapes and important relationships fail us and keep us stuck. None of us goes through life unharmed, so naturally we develop self-protective patterns to cope with the pain. Together, in a safe, warm, and judgment-free space, let us explore and process the underlying sources of your troubling symptoms and unhelpful behaviors at a pace that feels right for you. By going deep we will ensure long-term results. As you come to understand how your innermost self has had to adapt to the environment, the new ways of relating to oneself and others will emerge.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
