Good therapy should result in real life changes, not just increased self-awareness in the therapy office. People are seeking understanding, and guidance. My best work comes when there is mutual respect and an openness to learning. Everyone feels better when they find out they are not 'crazy' and there is an explanation for what they are feeling and thinking. I tend to be active in my work, because people come because they want feedback, not silence. My style is eclectic, meaning I will use many techniques to reach the goal, and the challenge will extend past my office door.

Seeking a therapist is the first step towards taking control of your life. Maybe you’re feeling pain, stress, frustration, or hopeless. You’re tired of pretending to be happy and sacrificing your own needs for the needs of others. Sometimes, you’re balancing so much you’re not sure what to tackle first.

In our work together, we'll use holistic & integrative therapy to help you first "put out the fires" in your life & learn to keep them at bay so that you can connect with your inner self, align with your values, & find your purpose. Many people come to me for help with anxiety, depression, trauma, or major life changes, looking for practical tools to "fix" their problems while working toward longer term emotional balance, self-compassion, & a fulfilling life. I can help you navigate your emotions in the here & now, understand past challenges so they can stop plaguing you, build resilience, & ultimately move forward with intention.

Psychotherapy, as I define it to my patients and students, is the collaborative inquiry between patient and therapist into the patient's patterns of interaction and patterns of expectation. This kind of study leads to greater personal and interpersonal freedom, which allows for the reduction or the elimination of symptoms. Psychotherapy can be of brief duration or an extended enterprise focusing on long term difficulties. The decision on which form of psychotherapy to undertake is usually based on an evaluation of 1 to 3 sessions, where a treatment plan is developed. I am interactive in my approach.

With 35 years of experience, I do individual psychotherapy with all age groups. Issues include loss; relational difficulties; regulating moods; self-injury; sadness and depression; and healing from a history of childhood abuse; infidelity, navigating the divorce process. While all sorts of folks are welcome here, my areas of expertise are: 1. in helping college students through that developmental transition, especially those who are first generation. 2. Helping people to navigate transitions and losses such as death as well as the divorce process.

I specialize in working with adults and couples struggling with relationship issues, anxiety, life transitions and substance use. When we are anxious and overwhelmed, it can cause us to feel disconnected from others. Feeling stuck and stressed can trigger self-doubt and poor decision-making, and this chips away at our self-esteem and unravels our relationships. I can help you identify the core issues that are negatively impacting you and your relationships, and deterring you from enjoying your life and achieving your goals.

For people of all ages, difficulties in life may result from a lost connection with one’s internal experience. Psychotherapy offers the opportunity to attend closely to one’s thoughts and feelings in a safe, supportive environment. In child therapy, play is the primary mode of communication. Through play, children explore their internal world, rehearse for life, process past events, practice creativity, and learn to moderate themselves. As children begin to feel understood and understand themselves, their internal experience can become their guide to being in the world.

When life changes happen unexpectedly, it can be hard to reach out for support. It's important to me to be a safe space for those experiencing any range of life shifts, including: personal and relational roadblocks, sexuality issues, life transitions, trauma and grief and loss. I strive to meet my clients where they are, and adapt to their individual needs and framework. I work from a person-centered/ trauma-informed lens, and use strengths-based perspective, mindfulness, and humanistic therapies. I hope to work together to create new patterns of thinking to guide you towards the personal, and professional goals you wish to achieve.

I have been working in the mental health field for many years and recognize that therapy is one of the most personal and difficult things someone can do. Because of this, I tailor my services and training to the unique needs of each of my clients.

Choosing a new therapist can be intimidating, whether it’s your first time or you’ve been in therapy forever. I respect this and try to make the process of starting therapy one that feels as comfortable as possible from our first session. I believe the most important part of being human is our ability to empathize with others, and therapy should be a space where we can tell our story and truly feel heard, understood, and validated.

Do you feel disconnected and overwhelmed in your life? Today's stress can start to feel like it’s closing in on you. In your relationship, you may feel alone and wonder if you can ever reconnect. You might wonder if your family will ever stop fighting and just talk to each other again. You all used to have fun together - what changed? If you’re a health care provider or managing health concerns yourself, you may feel unsure how to manage the cumulative aspect of stress or find balance in your life.

I believe that peace of mind is possible—for individuals, couples, and their loved ones—even after every other option has failed. I’ve been in practice for more than 30 years and have worked with countless individuals, couples, and families to assess and address a wide range of issues, including relationship and career concerns, major life transitions, chronic health challenges, and problems related to mental health and substance use.

In my work, I help young adults and adults who are experiencing various difficulties in their lives, including stress, depression, anxiety, family conflicts, and grief.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
