I've been involved in the behavioral health field over 25 years working with children and adults. In that time, I have become acquainted with numerous types of treatment. I've seen many positive responses to these techniques, but have also heard clients state how the reality of their lives did not always fit the mold of some approaches. This "fitting a square peg into a round hole" has been an issue for some clients in previous treatment. Though issues people experience can be common to others, they are also specific to the individual. This makes more generalized treatments difficult.

As a Certified EMDR Therapist I specialize in trauma, performance enhancement and anxiety/depression. I work with adults and adolescents to facilitate personal growth and achieve substantive change in their lives. Negative cognitions, unhealthy beliefs and emotions can be linked to unresolved disturbing/traumatic experiences from ones past. The remnants of these experiences can lead to low self-esteem, self-doubt, and emotional dysregulation. I assist clients to cultivate greater self-awareness while reprocessing the past disturbances in a way that enhances self-confidence, personal performance and interpersonal relationships.

Whatever your reason is for deciding to seek therapy, I believe it is important to find a therapist that makes you feel safe, understood, and heard. Stripped away of all the fancy language therapy is a process of growth and change. I have had the privilege of helping people grow and change for over 20 years. I’ve also had the benefit of doing this in a wide variety of roles from crisis intervention, to classroom teacher where I was given the honor of being named my district’s teacher of the year, to the last decade as a therapist. I’ve learned that the recipe for change is different for each individual and a large part of that is finding the right combination of motivators, techniques, and support systems to help people achieve their goals.

Is it true that one can take steps to become healthier, happier and more productive in their lives? We often find that we get easily wrapped up in the hustle bustle of daily living, and we can tend to forget about ourselves while taking care of those around us. Perhaps, you have found that coping skills that were effective in the past, are no longer working, and have become problematic. Has addiction impacted your life in a profoundly negative way, or is sustaining long term sobriety difficult? We can begin a journey to more positive perspectives.

Anger Management Therapists

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
