I currently work for Catholic Charities and have done so since 2007. I have been working with children, adolescents, couples, and families for nearly 30 yrs years who are experiencing acute or chronic mental health issues. Some of those issues include but are not limited to: grief/loss, life stressors/traumas, depression, anxiety, relationship problems, behavioral issues in children, and ADHD. When I ask my client's what they are hoping to gain from therapy, most will summarize that they simply want to feel better! So that is what we (you and me) will set out to accomplish.

Whether you are facing life-changing circumstances, finally facing an ongoing issue and ready to change, or simply need an objective sounding board, reaching out to a therapist is a courageous step. We will work together to explore what underlies the difficulties you face and collaborate to find solutions and mechanisms for coping. In therapy we will work together to develop a trusting relationship so that you feel safe enough to express your most authentic and vulnerable self.

My therapeutic perspective comes from the belief that the relationship we build in therapy is the foundation of all meaningful work you do in session. I strive to create an environment that allows you to feel comfortable and accepted to work on hard things. I enjoy supporting clients to explore the connections between earlier life experiences and their current symptoms. I believe you are the expert in your own life and will assist you in seeking better understanding of your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I hope to help you notice how emotions show up in your body, learn skills to cope in healthier ways, and feel more grounded.

I have a very engaging and relaxed approach to therapy. Clients often report that they appreciate my authentic style and sense of humor. In any case, the process of therapy begins and is sustained as the client feels heard and understood and can begin to feel comfortable. I come to this work with a certain reverence for what is dignified, courageous, and creative in each of us which over time has informed my life both personally and in my work in supporting others. I rely on no particular therapy framework or "treatment modality" but nonetheless bring a pretty big box of tools to the table.

Most of us have never been taught how to build great relationships, raise children, or to be content and find meaning; these issues tend to cause us a great deal of stress. Stress is a major cause of anxiety and behaviors that you want to change. However, you have the building blocks within you to put together great relationships, raise children, and have a meaningful flourishing life. Sometimes the building blocks you already have get jumbled and need to be adjusted. Errors in thinking lead us to feel bad and spiral downward or become anxious or depressed.

I recognize that it takes a great deal of vulnerability and courage to embark on the therapeutic journey. My approach is trauma-informed and incorporates art therapy, mindfulness, cognitive behavioral, solution-focused and strengths-based models. I find that art therapy is a helpful and unique way for clients to approach difficulties and express themselves. I also believe that clients don’t exist in a vacuum. I explore aspects of the various systems within which clients exist. My goal as a therapist is to provide a creative and accepting space for clients to be truly seen and heard.

It’s an ongoing privilege to empower individuals to overcome personal obstacles from the bumpy chapters of their lives. It is my goal to assist clients in bringing about change, healing, growth, and acceptance in their lives. I also believe that knowledge is a powerful transformative tool, which is why I incorporate bibliotherapy and psychoeducation in my therapy sessions along with cognitive behavioral therapy, yoga, and integrative medicine. You will have the autonomy to direct your own treatment because the outcome is in your hands.

I strive to empower individuals and help others achieve their goals through insight and developing personal strengths. I believe developing healthy relationships, finding life balance, and restoring an individual's inner world is vital in establishing one's overall well-being. Everyone goes through challenges and hardships in life. I respect how difficult it is to ask for help and receive support during these times. Building a therapeutic rapport, creating a safe place in the counseling process, and respecting every individual's life journey is important to me.

Not all of us are given the book on how to have healthy and fulfilling relationships with others or ourselves. It takes courage to explore and share what we are struggling with and begin to write (or rewrite) our book on how we want to feel and be in the world. You deserve to experience connection, relief, and acceptance in order to feel secure enough to explore and take risks in life. My goal is to get curious about the blocks that keep you from experiencing those qualities and collaborate with you to remove them.

As humans we all have complex lives and due to this complexity, we all experience stressful events, but if these have started to impact daily life functioning and your quality of life, it is time to look at your options. The idea of therapy can be intimidating, but in reality it is an opportunity to self-reflect, promote healing, and improve one's quality of life.

To those around you, you may look like you have it all together. But on the inside, you are screaming. You're hiding the obsessive thoughts and "crazy" compulsions you engage in so you can maybe lower your level of anxiety. You can't sleep due to your anxiety. You've tried to make changes, but it never gets better. These are secrets that you think no one will understand.

I am a licensed independent social worker and I currently provide therapy to kids ranging from ages 4-17. Children may display concerning behaviors and emotions such as a refusal to comply with expectations, inattention, impulsivity, a withdrawal from things they previously liked, excessive worrying, or being overly sensitive to different stimuli in the environment. These behaviors can negatively impact their relationships with parents and/or caregivers, siblings, teachers, and friends both at home and in school.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Iowa?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
