What is unique is the combination of private practice while having either an academic post or working at Boulder Community Hospital's Pain Management Program.
I assume serious intent to address whatever brought the patient to my office in the first place. It is my hope to form the most positive therapeutic alliance possible. The first step is to acknowledge the courage it took to make the call. I have been practicing as a licensed Clinical Psychologist for thirty years. I have also served as a faculty member at the University of Colorado Boulder for over twenty years. I mostly see chronic depressed and anxious patients I .have worked across the spectrum from imminently suicidial to the broader existential issues concerning a more meaningful life.

My work is rooted in Pain Reprocessing Therapy, Mindfulness and Self-Compassion, Internal Family Systems and Therapeutic Writing.
I help high-achieving, do-it-all women overcome chronic pain, anxiety and burnout to live a more joyful and restful life. Often, our bodies give us cues that it’s time to slow down while our minds push us to keep going. We have learned that expectations, responsibilities and productivity take priority over our own care and needs. Maybe you have tried to power through your body’s cues over and over again only to feel stuck, exhausted, and unsure of how to find relief. Our work together will empower you to come back to yourself, to tend to your body and nervous system and to feel more present, connected and at ease.

I specialized in working with those with chronic pain, illness, and health concerns, but also have particular attunement to those with trauma and PTSD.
I approach therapy with a client-centered framework to let you determine what path your journey is taking. We will create a relationship together where I can be your mirror and reflect your innate wisdom that life's stress and trauma have obscured. Lasting change is created through this empowerment that gives you the strength and awareness to deepen personal resilience. I blend a model of evidence-based therapeutic techniques with non-traditional spiritual knowledge and practices like mindfulness. Through compassion, present-moment focus, and somatic guidance, I offer support unique to what you need for your individual situation.

Your trauma makes you feel trapped. You want to make a change, but your body is in pain, and your mind feels like sludge combined with lead. Anytime you try to open up about what you’re experiencing, people have told you that it’s "all in your head." Your friends and colleagues can’t tell, but every day is a struggle. You felt like you couldn't take it anymore a decade ago, but somehow, you've managed to carry on. Now, it’s like the color has drained out of your life. Nothing feels good, and relationships are either dull or chaotic. You're sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.

I specialize in all types of trauma but especially focus on reclaiming empowerment after relational traumas including sexual assault, abuse, body trauma/ pain, domestic violence, adoption, and intergenerational/ancestral trauma.
Do you want to come alive through accessing your embodied self? Are you willing to explore your shadows to find your power? You’re in the right place. Counseling isn't about fitting into a box, it's about painting outside the lines, dancing like nobody's watching, and singing from your inner voice. I value a client-centered, social justice and multicultural approach to therapy and strive to fully understand each individual client's uniqueness. So, let's co-create a space to allow you to dive deep into your shadows while feeling held, guided, and supported.

In working with grief, I provide support in experiencing the pain of the loss and also provide a roadmap of what to expect and how to support yourself through the process.
Are you experiencing anxiety or depression that keeps you from living fully? Are you feeling alone and grieving, having recently lost a loved one, a pet, a job, or a relationship? Perhaps you are going through a confusing life transition and are looking for a new sense of purpose and direction. It is challenging to look within yourself when things feel chaotic and painful, however looking within and developing a more compassionate relationship with all parts of yourself is the foundation for healing and possibility. There are times in everyone’s life when we need some extra support, and you don't need to walk this road alone.

I can help you understand and heal from your trauma, anxiety, and pain.
I work with clients who want to stop feeling controlled by symptoms of anxiety, trauma, and depression. I have worked with survivors of multiple traumas including sexual assault, child abuse, interpersonal violence, war trauma, and torture. I also work with postpartum women who want to feel like themselves again. I help men and women heal from the effects of limiting cultural ideas about who they should be based on their gender. I also help people get rid of chronic pain using cutting edge therapy techniques, and I often incorporate walking sessions into therapy to deepen integration of what is discussed during session.

I am dedicated to working with people who want to get at the roots of their emotional pain and distress. My fundamental approach to treatment is relational. Therapy is a process where we will develop an alliance in which your emotional and developmental needs are made a priority. My approach requires a commitment on both our parts to stick with the process, which often can be upsetting and hard, at least in the moment. Retraining our brains to better think, relate and feel takes time, it is a learning process. Facilitating such development for you is my expertise.

You’ve had experiences you can’t talk about with others. You’ve never made peace with them. They haunt you, lurking under the surface all the time. Leaving you feeling rattled, jittery, afraid, jumpy, depressed, fatigued and isolated. Decades of abuse. A pattern of falling in love with unavailable, alcoholic narcissists. Escaped poverty in shameful ways. Had an illness, injury or disability that changed your life forever. Perhaps you escaped a cult. Had a psychotic or manic episode. A near death experience. A spiritual awakening turned crisis. Think you’re an alien or were abducted. Healing wounds that are not yours.

Forrest has sat with elders in their dying process, helped chauffeur young adults through the existential turmoil, and attended to the many others needs for compassion, authenticity, and simple humanity that many of us long for. In 2008, Forrest deployed to Iraq and witnessed first hand an incredible amount of suffering. This helped to awaken Forrest's heart to the dire need of care, compassion, and human kindness. Later, Forrest would go on to organize community events for homelessness, humanitarian crisis, healing through the arts and mindfulness practices. Forrest continues to strive toward a world of caring compassion for all.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
