Most likely you're not looking for a therapist because you feel so awesome you want to pay someone to talk about it. I know that certainly wasn't the case for me - I first sought therapy because I was in a ton of pain (and not the physical kind). If that sounds familiar, first off, welcome. Second, although suffering is difficult, sometimes it is the only thing that can motivate us to make the positive changes necessary for true happiness. Although it might be external circumstances that caused you to start looking for a therapist, it is the internal work that sets us free.

It turns out that trying to outrun your anxiety isn’t working as well as you’d hoped. I don't blame you for trying though! You didn’t sign up for a mind that’s always picturing the worst-case-scenario. I know you've been trying to do "the work" on your own and feel frustrated that you haven't been able to make more progress. You're not broken and you're not a lost cause. Your brain is simply in overdrive. The truth is, you need support from a professional who's already helped hundreds of people just like you.

Board-certified therapist specializing in couples, family relationships & midlife concerns. Let's disrupt the patterns causing hurt, anger & loneliness to create more respect & understanding in your relationship. Direct & honest, I use "gentle tough love" to help challenge beliefs, interrupt negative cycles & invite in new ways of communicating & connecting. Couples, parent-teen pairs & adults recognize that contradictory feelings are normal ("I love you but I also hate you sometimes") and rather than focus on what "went bad," can honor that something is still good - loving people aching to connect, support & understand each other.

Couples Counseling: Are you longing to reconnect with your partner and get back the closeness you once had? Is it hard to talk about issues without it turning into a conflict? Has your relationship been affected by some form of infidelity and now the two of you are struggling to repair your relationship? You may have tried traditional couples counseling and are looking for a more effective approach? I use Imago Relationship Therapy as the way I work with couples because I have found it to be the most effective form of couples therapy that I have come across in my 20 years as a couples counselor.

Is life passing you by? Worry, indecision, tension, nervousness, lack of confidence, compulsive behaviors, avoidance of people or situations- the pressures of life today make anxiety and depression familiar to us all. Feelings and relationships may seem messy and out of control or you may feel stuck in behaviors you don't like. Beliefs, patterns, and reactions based in the past may cause you to avoid the changes you most want to make. Recognizing these obstacles and developing the skills to work with them will allow you to develop the confidence in yourself that you need to live well

I am, first and foremost, a highly trained Therapist. For over thirty years I have worked with couples, individuals, and families helping put an anchor back into their lives. As a Marriage and Family Therapist who is licensed in both Colorado and California, I have two Masters degrees: a Masters of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Masters of Divinity (a three-year ministerial academic training) both earned from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California that has been coined “The Princeton of the West”. I use a "systems" approach to marriage and family therapy which means I view each person as part of a whole.

As a relational therapist, I imagine you're tired of the vigilance and tears, the numbness and withdrawal, the emotional processing that seems to entertain a familiar loop, and you’re wanting the skills and agency to navigate your relationship together in ways that can enhance the connection, rather than peel away at it. Maybe you're six months into the the relationship and starting to feel the attachment kick in, or established and navigating complex cultural and community dynamics, or wanting to shift and expand relational scripts, or interested in Consciously Uncoupling. You don't have to live in pain and problem solve alone.

This is a wonderful place to start and I’m so glad you’re taking this first step to healing.

I work with clients who are experiencing problems that are typically long-standing, repetitive, and significantly interfering with their life. Some examples would include unsatisfying or unstable relationships, history of anxiety and depression, feeling they can't "be seen" or get their needs met, and living with emotional pain, chronic shame and disconnection from self. Client's often want to explore the impact of their early life and development, or focus on increasing their self-esteem and wellbeing, and many want to gain a deeper understanding of their patterns. Psychotherapy is an effective way to heal and live courageously.

You're in the right place. Maybe things aren't working and you're looking for change...maybe you don't know what it is, but something needs to be different. You're wanting to feel understood and supported. Sometimes struggles and issues may be clear as day while at other times feel ambigous, uncertain, and ongoing. If you're looking for change, connection, and understanding, let's connect.

Empathy, freedom to express yourself and unconditional positive regard are not just a starting point but interwoven into every aspect of my work. I have a mindfulness framework. I believe emotions and thoughts that we struggle with cannot simply be forced away by logic or wanting them to be gone. In fact, the more we try to wish them away the more power we give them. Instead, we learn we learn to tolerate and understand them as a part of us.

Welcome. I’m really glad you’re here. If you move through the world with a deep spiritual sensitivity—feeling things others may not, sensing meaning in dreams, symbols, or moments that feel mystical or even prophetic—you deserve a space where that is honored, not pathologized. In our work, we’ll hold those experiences with care and curiosity, exploring what they reveal about your inner life. This is a space for your whole self—mind, body, soul, and spirit—to be seen and heard. We’ll move gently, letting your own wisdom guide us toward healing and integration, grounded in spiritual resonance and deep respect.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
