I work with clients encountering aging parents, chronic health issues, and complex family relationships including grief and loss.
Hello, I'm Travis Buchanan, a licensed marriage and family therapist and licensed advanced alcohol drug counselor based in Tustin, California, and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I love what I do for work. When I'm not practicing therapy, I'm spending time with friends, catching a baseball game, reading, or listening to music.

I have years of experience working with individuals (adults, children and adolescents), couples and families confronted with a variety of issues, such as depression, anxiety, suicidality, trauma, grief and loss, stress management, relationship difficulties, divorce, and life transitions.
Sometimes the challenges we face in life can feel overwhelming and impossible to overcome, and it is my belief that through authentic human connection, compassion and unconditional positive regard one can open up new doors of self-discovery that will allow them to find meaning, purpose and healing. It is my goal to help shine light on areas of your inner experience that will foster your ability to expand your self-awareness and make life changes. No two individuals are the same, thus I strongly believe in working with you to understand what your unique experience is like and adjust my approach to meet you where you are at.

Accepting New Patients. When we feel stuck in our situation, it can create feelings of hopelessness. In addition to the many problems that complicate our daily lives such as anxiety, panic attacks, depression, patients come to me with complex relationship issues including marital distress, divorce recovery, verbal & emotional abuse, loss of child, parent, or spouse. I approach therapy from a holistic perspective, to address the root problem, not just the symptoms. Like physical therapy, the goal is to get well and end treatment. I offer perspective on your experience, and provide clear, concise directions on meeting your goals.

I have experienced depression, trauma, grief and breast cancer.
You don't have to go through life alone. I am here to help with the bumps in the road. It's not surprising that in our environment there has been an increase in depression and anxiety. I have created a safe and empathetic environment where you can learn let go of unhealthy relationship patterns and learn new coping mechanisms. Research has found the longer trauma, depression and anxiety go untreated the worse it will get. You can learn how to create balance in your life and have healthy relationships. You can also learn healthy self-care and self-compassion. You don't have to feel guilty about self-care. It is not selfish.

I am a grief informed therapist and have over 10 years of experience working with diverse populations, such as children, adolescents, adults, and families with a variety of needs.
Life sometimes throws you unexpected challenges that can make you feel overwhelmed, anxious, and hopeless. If you are struggling with life challenges that are impacting your quality of life, I am here to tell you there is hope. Loss is often one of our biggest life challenges that trigger mental health issues. Grief is a natural response to loss, whether that is a loss of a relationship, job, or death of a loved one, it can also bring up thoughts and feelings of past traumas. Processing and learning about loss and grief and what to expect when grieving can help you grow and heal.

I specialize in working with individuals with Adult ADD and provide Life Coaching as part of their care, Other areas of expertise are grief and loss along with Aging and Life transitions.
I believe the most positive transformational aspect of therapy is when someone feels listened to,... really listened to. When this occurs, many levels of healing are possible. Ambitions may be discovered or recovered, losses and sorrows may be grieved for the first time or for the 1,000th time, and self-awareness and self-esteem can emerge in new ways. My approach focuses on developing an inner dialogue with oneself that is is compassionate and restorative.

Everyone experiences challenges and pain in life, yet when they happen to you it's an experience that is uniquely yours. It takes courage to face uncomfortable feelings and to cultivate an open heart. To recognize you need support and seek treatment is good coping. I work with a wide variety of clients experiencing traumas; transitions; anxiety and OCD; grief and loss; sad mood, guilt, hopelessness; excessive worry; overwhelm; irritability/anger; relationship strain/conflict; identity issues; and work/school stress. I'm trained in pregnancy/postpartum adjustments through Postpartum Support International, and OCD through IOCDF/BTTI.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
