I help clients with relationship issues, parenting challenges, family conflicts, those coping with grief and loss, and couples counseling.
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California since 2006. I was a registered psychologist, counselor, and family mediator in New Zealand before moving to the United States as a professor in marriage and family therapy at San Diego State University. I worked and trained in educational psychology before being immersed in narrative therapy, narrative mediation, and solution-focused therapy in the 1990s. I have worked a lot in schools with children and teens, addressed parenting challenges, helped blended families address unique crises that arise, help clients with separation and divorce.

You are probably reading this because you are experiencing some form of difficulty in your life, may it be loss or grief, childhood trauma, relationship difficulties or a general sense of low mood and anxiety, perhaps not even knowing why? Many people experience some form of disruption in their life, through which they can grow and develop more insight into whom they are, how they can resolve their issues and/or learn to tolerate living with them.

My current areas of practice include adults and adolescents coping with anxiety, depression, grief/loss, addiction, transitions, PTSD, LGBTQIA support, sexual assault, domestic violence, relationship and intimacy issues, and family conflict.
Managing our emotional world can be tough. My aim is to help you gain a better understanding of how your experiences have impacted the way you approach life and identify areas that need adjustment to reduce stress and increase balance. The safe space I create with my clients is designed to increase openness and authenticity, deepen self-awareness, and turn it into action toward their goals. I approach each client uniquely and help my clients develop coping skills based on their individual needs. Some skills include somatic experiencing to help nervous system regulation, CBT, and mindfulness/meditation techniques.

Do you suffer from the effects of having bad experiences that have left you feeling traumatized & stuck in the past? There are big "T" (traumatic) events such as sexual assault, rape, child abuse, war, death, major car accidents and then there are what is called the little "t" events such as emotional abuse, neglect, rejection, homophobia (bi-trans), hurt and a series of other "seemingly smaller" but yet a times equally damaging experiences. Over time these events can over time erode your feelings of self esteem, sense of safety and ability to trust in the world.

I work with individuals and couples who want to grow beyond the wounds of their past and the challenges of the present: whether they show up as anxiety, depression, relational conflict, insecure attachment, trauma, addiction, codependency, obsessions, compulsions, or grief.
In life, we rarely have the time to calmly observe what’s in our head and in our heart. The time it takes to honor our feelings and thoughts without rushing to repress or react to them. Without this time, our mind can begin to feel like an enemy instead of a friend. The beautiful thing is that many of our most difficult feelings evaporate when they are given the patience and support to be held and to be heard. Our energy is then freed up to pursue our needs and our goals.

I have certification in Grief and Mourning and Spiritual counseling.
I grew up in the state of Michigan and moved to California in the 60s. I decided to become a therapist in my 20's and received my B.A. in Psychology. However, I was single, working in the airline industry, and was enjoying the travel and postings in other countries. I lived and worked in Japan for 2 years and in Singapore for 2 years. I finally decided to pursue my lifelong interest and obtained my Masters's degree in Clinical Psychology and my license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in California.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
