I help individuals and couples understand and overcome barriers that get in the way of living a meaningful and fulfilling life; this can include professional, emotional, or interpersonal challenges. My approach draws on narrative and cognitive based principles, that value the understanding of how our experiences, self-awareness, and relationships impact how we cope with life. I believe the process of therapy is one that encourages collaboration and curiosity, and in doing so creates a hospitable environment to explore a variety of life experiences and achieve a healthy life balance.

I perform traditional talk therapy, but often supplement that with embodiment work, narrative therapy or other creative arts modalities.
In life, we often feel overwhelmed, out of control, or caught in patterns we can’t seem to escape. We may be affected by trauma, feel stuck in relationships, get caught in self defeating thought spirals or find that we are sabotaging ourselves. Many of us move around the world carrying secret struggles with negative thoughts, emotions, or urges, which disturb our day-to-day life and make waves in our relationships. Changing life circumstances-both positive (like the birth of a child) or negative (loss of a job)-can cause anxiety and strife.

As a strengths-based, person-centered therapist rooted in positive psychology I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic approaches to build insight and integrate techniques from narrative and mindfulness-based approaches.
Are you stressed and use alcohol, other substances, food, exercise, sex, work, spending, gambling, or screen use excessively? Do you think “I got this” after planning a strict regimen for change only to break it soon after? Do failed attempts cause you to feel down? Do you long for past times when you could enjoy these pleasures? Do you suspect there may be core issues that drive these behaviors but fear slowing down to explore them? Is there a personal or family history of trauma or emotional issues that causes anxiety? Do you feel exhausted and yearn to wake up refreshed? Are you isolating to avoid people who are concerned?

If you want to understand yourself on a deeper level, if you believe you may have formed some distortions in the ways you talk to yourself, I will help you create a new narrative, one that promotes self compassion, peace and joy.
You may feel stuck, anxious, depressed, or hopeless. However, just the courage to take the first step in knowing you want to experience your life differently takes strength. I work with my clients to expand that strength in a safe environment. When struggling with a family or friend relationship, or when experiencing increased stress from some changing circumstances in life, often unhealed issues start to surface. Now we really need support. These times are actually the ones where the most healing can occur.

I believe that understanding someone’s present world requires insight regarding the past and how it is impacting life now. Therapy can help you break out of old, maladaptive patterns of behavior that are not useful anymore while concurrently providing you concrete strategies for managing overwhelming feelings and challenges in the moment. Sometimes it’s difficult to even imagine your goals, understand what’s going wrong or think of solutions to overwhelming problems. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or just a general sense of dissatisfaction, therapy can help you grow and maximize your true potential.

Waitlist for new clients
Life changing events, a traumatic past, interpersonal conflicts, ongoing feelings, such as anxiety, grief, depression and guilt all motivate people to seek therapy. Therapy works best where a trusting relationship is developed. Experience, compassion, respect, honesty, deep listening ; and when appropriate, humor, are traits I bring to the therapeutic relationship. I support my clients to explore ways to express and manage challenging feelings, people or circumstances. Finding safety with curiosity and compassion and validation for the self, we work toward individual and relationship growth.

It’s been found that the most important factor for creating change in therapy is the therapeutic relationship. I offer a safe, non-judgmental space to process emotions and transmute pain into growth. I consider all aspects of an individual and implement a biopsychosocial-spiritual, culturally-sensitive and client-centered approach with individuals, couples, families and groups. I’ve used various research-based modalities including DBT, EFT, Internal Family Systems/parts work, EMDR, and art therapy. Additionally, I am now offering KAP (Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy) remotely.

Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
