Specializing in trauma of all kinds, I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC), Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist (LCAS), Certified Advanced Integrative Therapy (AIT) Practitioner, and have a Masters Degree in Art Therapy.
Even the most self-aware humans can experience periods of confusion, stuckness, and destabilization, and oftentimes suffering has unconscious roots. I've dedicated my training and education as a helping professional to learn how to unlock messages from the unconscious to promote healing and well-being. I also strive to arm my clients with concrete tools to use independently, long after our work together is completed. I have many years of experience helping people heal, blending a variety of nontraditional and expressive therapeutic approaches with evidence-based interventions to meet the individual needs of the people I serve.

I am trained to help clients discover how their process of creating art parallels the ways they live.
I am specifically inclined to work with folks who are curious about using the creative process to heal, who are LGBTQ+, who are interested in exploring new ways to find or relocate their intuitive voice to reconstruct and tell their story, and who are in recovery from substance use, imposter syndrome, or wounded childhoods.Compiling words together to form accurate depictions of personal narratives attached to life experiences can feel extremely daunting in talk therapy alone. With the invitation to use art, movement, metaphor, sound and play, exploring creativity can provide non-threatening means to access empowerment and healing.

Harmonizing and healing the mind-body-spirit through music, art, movement, ceremony & integration of non-ordinary states of consciousness.
You have BIG feelings and always have. You are sensitive to your environment, tuned into the subtle nuances and energies of the people/world around you. You feel it in your gut. You sense it in your body. You were bullied, shamed, or invalidated for these feelings growing up – told you were too sensitive. You learned to doubt, squash, numb, or project those feelings onto other people and things as a way to stay safe in a world that doesn't have time for such things. You people-please, overwork, over-think, detach. You run from your feelings until they suddenly consume you. Disconnect or engulfed. You crave harmony inside and out.

My name is Paula, and grief was my initiation into therapeutic art making.
Your grief is welcome here. When someone you love dies, your life shifts drastically. Every type of grief has the potential to be life disrupting, but grief experienced after suicide, overdose, or other traumatic loss can be particularly challenging. You may feel: shock, confusion, doubt, crushing pain, heartbreak, loneliness, despair, anxiety, overwhelm, anger, guilt, and isolation. Your life has been turned upside down in an instant. You feel lost. You don’t know who you are anymore, but you know you won’t be the same. You’re looking for a guide. Someone who gets it and can handle what you’ve got going on.

Using CBT, Somatic Experiencing, Art Therapy, and other tools, I help adult survivors of childhood emotional abuse, neglect, & inter-generational trauma work through their past experiences, manage cycles of anxiety, depression, & disconnection, build skills for coping with current events, and find freedom from the patterns that have been holding them back.
It's time to get up, but the day ahead feels too overwhelming. You've missed out on so much, and you worry what will happen next and what everyone will think. You feel powerless to change, and you’re so tired of trying things that don’t work. No one understands why you can’t just move forward, and you may feel completely alone. I want you to know that you’re not crazy, and things don't have to be like this forever. My clients report a deeper level of healing as they feel more connected to their bodies, experience more ease in their daily lives, and re-discover their strength and resilience.

I employ a holistic approach, integrating CBT, ACT, EMDR, and art therapy to address a range of challenges including depression, anxiety, ADHD, anger issues, relationship dynamics, parenting, gender exploration, substance use, and trauma.
Life can be a wild ride and finding your way through it can feel like an overwhelming task. However, you don't have to navigate this path alone. I believe that many of our challenges stem from normal reactions to unusual circumstances. My goal is to assist you in delving deeper into your understanding of yourself, your life, and your relationships, ultimately guiding you towards acceptance rather than struggle. Together, we will pinpoint the values you wish to nurture, compassionately confront any obstacles, and utilize creative techniques to help you craft a life that is both genuine and purposeful.

Although art isn't a requirement in our sessions, as an art therapist I believe the creative process is a helpful integrative tool to support others with challenging perfectionism, self-judgment, and has the ability to increase self-awareness, self-expression, and mindfulness (to name a few!).
Self-compassion can be tough and many of us are living our lives feeling disconnected from our bodies. More times than not, we have no idea how we got here. There are many forces at play and it's helpful to understand societal expectations and pressures to better understand ourselves. This is a second career for me and throughout my years as a therapist, I’ve observed how my previous experiences contribute to how I connect with people. Gradually, together, we can work to identify barriers, name emotions, tolerate distress, and move toward the life you want to be living.

Sometimes we are looking for someone to hold the hope for us. Throughout my life, I have been drawn to the story; the lore of identity, the narrative of families, the truth inside the metaphor. I feel it is of the upmost importance to provide people with a safe space to share their truth, a place to be honest and seen while challenging the stories we tell ourselves. As a person, I hope to be a lantern that can help to illuminate the way for you to reclaim your story. As a therapist, I received my bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Columbia International University in 2012 followed by my master’s in clinical counseling in 2016;

You are tired of feeling so overwhelmed and insecure. You look around and wonder how people seem to be handling things so differently than you are. You may feel too sensitive, tender, or hyperaware in your relationships, at work or school, or when taking in the state of the world. It is challenging to make choices, really feel like yourself, connect with others, or just get a break. You keep trying to fix things with varied success but keep feeling like you are hitting walls. However, you are ready to give yourself a little attention and to see if you can respond to life in new ways to feel more alive, loved, and free.

I work with clients in a relaxed, informal, and professional way to promote emotional safety and comfort within the relationship so that they can process openly and authentically about meaningful and often sensitive topics. While experiencing this connection, people are able to gain presence, reflect on experiences and plan for personal maintenance, change and growth. Many clients enjoy both spending time in the office, taking walks, spending time in nature, and/or meeting virtually for telehealth sessions. I like to utilize physical activity, mindfulness, and ecotherapy for engagement and emphasizing overall health and wellness.

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
