I know what it's like to suffer relational trauma and feel hopeless. I spent my childhood studying to be a doctor and once landing my spot in medical school, my efforts shifted. My long-term romantic relationship suffered. This ended in a traumatic car accident, which almost broke me. I trudged through the aftermath of medical recovery, betrayal and infidelity until God fully entered my life. A therapist then helped guide me into forgiving myself and living my life fully. Once the woman of my dreams entered and a secure attachment was built, I knew how to keep this new reality thriving. We are all built to thrive in connection

Do you feel "stuck" in your relationship? Often, people come in, wanting to strengthen their relationship, but feel stuck because their efforts to save the relationship aren't working, and often make things worse. I work with couples to help them get "unstuck" and to help them learn how they got there, and more importantly, how to begin enjoying one another, connecting, and becoming strong supports as they once were for one another. I also work with individuals who feel stuck, personally, in their own lives and in relationships, helping them identify their own patterns and get "unstuck."

My years of clinical practice have helped me to understand the value of an individual. Most people have the resources they need to manage the challenges they have, but they sometimes struggle to see the resources that are available to them. I use a solution focused, non judgmental, approach to help individuals resolve major life issues like addiction, depression, anxiety, and family and relational conflict. Individuals and couples can find affective attunement with themselves, their spouse, and their children, as they learn to strengthen who they are as individuals and become clearer about their own emotional regulation.

Are you feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, or like you are having a difficult time coping with life right now? You are not alone! I understand how challenging it can be to feel stuck and wanting to have more peace in your life. I fully believe the statement by Jon Kabat Zinn who said, “As long as you are breathing there is more right with you than wrong with you.” My goal as a therapist is to draw out the strengths that you already have and help you build new skills in order to face the challenges, transitions, and stresses that you are facing in your life.

I have been a therapist since 1978. I taught undergraduate and graduate Psychology courses at Ottawa University (11 years) and Rio Salado College (17 years).I specialize in OCD and obsessive sexual behaviors but have treated nearly every type of client and diagnosis over the past four decades. I'm told I'm personable and that people feel comfortable with me immediately. I'm a good nonjudgmental listener and I believe that counseling should be a deep but intriguing investigation - not a painful one.

Lying awake with your back toward your spouse, hurting again. Your mind racing, blaming your partner for all the problems in the relationship. The thought comes to mind, “The argument was days ago, why can’t we talk?” You’ve tried things before, but only for a short time. The self doubt creeps in, shame, loneliness, sadness, guilt. What happened to the joyful days of the beginning? Life. Life got in the way and took you both by storm. Now, you feel as though you no longer know your spouse, and he/she doesn’t really know you. Before you finally drift off to sleep one last thought crosses your mind, “I want to make this work.”

It takes a tremendous amount of courage to reach out for help. Many of us have learned that asking for help isn't safe yet reality tells us that genuine connection to others is as important as the oxygen you breathe. The truth is that you don't have to work through your painful losses, fears or heartaches alone. Everything that you experience has its reasons for existing and the good news is that your mind has a limitless capacity to learn, grow and heal. You deserve to make sense of your challenges even if the process is difficult. I can help guide you on your path to healing and understanding.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
