An ideal client is someone eager to build on their current skills but who faces mental barriers such as anxiety, self-doubt, or inconsistent focus. They seek evidence-based tools to strengthen confidence, maintain composure under pressure, and achieve consistent peak performance. They value a trusted, supportive partner who understands both the science and the human side of performance, and they are committed to personal growth in pursuit of their full potential.

If you're reading this, chances are something brought you here, maybe you're feeling overwhelmed by everything on your plate, stuck in your own head, or like you're just going through the motions without really knowing why. You might be in the middle of a big transition like starting college, starting a new career, or figuring out what comes next. Or maybe it's not one specific thing—it's just that anxiety has made everything feel harder, relationships feel more complicated, or you're carrying thoughts and emotions that you don't quite know what to do with.

Hello, I'm Blake Barney, and I've been dedicated to the counseling field for over 13 years. My journey began with a focus on helping children who had experienced traumatic events, which ignited my passion for making a difference in people's lives. After earning my first master's degree in addiction counseling, I started providing substance abuse counseling to both adolescents and adults in Idaho. In 2014, I moved to Arizona and continued my work in substance abuse and addiction counseling, specifically with adolescent females in a residential setting.

Time is the most powerful force in the world. It can change your feelings, finances, friends, and even family. Whether change blindsides you or you’re forced to watch as it all unravels, you’re likely to be left with two more F words: Fear and Frustration. Overwhelming emotions, unanswerable questions, and the loss control can make it impossible to find solid ground on your own. That’s where I come in. I’m a calming presence, your port in the storm. I will work to help you settle things down and to regain a sense of control. If we work together you will get a therapist who is comfortable, sincere, and willing to go the extra mile.

Over the years I have worked with so many people who come to the work unhappy with some part of their lives, looking for an avenue to a better life, and not entirely sure how to get there. Maybe you are struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, trauma, or an addiction. The inspiration I derive from this work comes from the endless wonder found discovering latent possibilities that might not be apparent at first but, with exploration, turn into paths of personal growth and fulfillment. I am always surprised by the unexpected gems found on the path.

I opened my practice in 1998 and still LOVE what I do. My model follows a few basic principles: Provide a professional, understanding and calming environment; Offer a variety of tools and skills; Create a plan that recognizes thoughts, emotions and behavior; Evaluate the process and adjust as necessary. Customer Satisfaction is a priority, so many of our referrals come from other clients. I have a professional and friendly front office to provide a large number of services to the East Valley.

Let’s get real. I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. Seeking out a therapist who can help you on that path is the first step. How can I help you? Many people see therapy as a very one-sided conversation, with little opportunity for interaction or getting to experience each other as real people. In my approach, you will find that I keep it real! I want to help you achieve whatever solutions and life changes you are looking for while enjoying the process as much as possible and experiencing both yourself and your world in new ways. Your therapy does not always need to be painful.

My ideal client is someone who wants to get to the root cause of their anxiety, depression, stress or PTSD symptoms and has struggled to find success through traditional therapy that focuses on their thinking without addressing the underlying feeling. The source of the problem is not in the mind, but the trauma that is trapped in the body underneath the emotion. This trauma is what keeps us from exploring our emotions and finding a sense of connection. If your goal is to solve the mental health issues at the root cause, so you can live the best life possible, I'd love to schedule a free 15-minute consultation over the phone.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
