I work with all individuals but have developed specialties working with adolescents and young men , LGBT individuals with identity and "coming out" issues, and individuals who experience stressful relationships with family members.
*NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS AT THIS TIME* Are you frequently stressed, frustrated and find yourself snapping at the people you love the most? Do you worry well into the night and feel your confidence lagging at work or school? Are you easily angered and find that your relationships are suffering? I help people who feel anxious, lost and overwhelmed understand where the feelings come from so they can implement practical strategies to feel less burdened and start feeling better. I work collaboratively with clients to identify goals and create a plan for change.

As a transgender man , I am dedicated to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community because I truly believe that strength lies within human connections and feelings of acceptance.
I am a compassionate and empathetic person, and my goal as your therapist is to provide a safe and non-judgmental setting while you embark on your gender journey. My therapeutic approaches include motivational interviewing, solution-focused interventions, and person-centered engagement. Shortly after receiving my bachelor’s degree, I moved to Arizona and began my journey to discover my authentic self. In 2009, I made the courageous steps to live authentically as a transgender man and medically transition. Therefore, I bring a wealth of knowledge regarding resources to therapy.

Hello, I'm Austin Pohevitz, and my goal is to provide better, more relatable services to men than what is typically offered in the mental health field. Men make up half of the population, so they should have services that are catered to their needs. Men don't need to change the way they are to fit the dominant theories...psychology needs to change for them. Are you looking for a safe and secure environment to deal with what you have going on? Are you seeking a better path for you and the ones you love by proxy? Are you searching for meaning amongst the chaos, and purpose in an ever evolving world? You might be in the right place.

My passion is to help men understand what they want from life and to address what is getting in the way. Issues that get in the way include addictions of all kinds, depression, anxiety, and anger. Perhaps a partner is unhappy and suggests change needs to happen and soon, or else. Asking for help is often the most difficult decision for men to make. The pain and fear we feel tells us something is wrong. But if we ask for help what does it say about us? Shouldn't we be able to handle this on our own? The most courageous thing you can do is to reach out to and ask for help. I am offering that help. No Judgement.

My approach is ideology-free and instead based in research on the male brain.
Have you grown concerned for yourself or your son? It could be anxiety...or depression...or isolation...or maybe you aren't exactly sure and are looking for an expert's second opinion. I specialize in working with guys high school age and older. Oftentimes the clients who come to see me are coming to therapy for the first time and don't exactly know what to expect. Or they have done therapy in the past but didn't find it to be that helpful because all their previous therapist did was let them talk for an hour each week.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
