While I draw from a number of modalities, including attachment, neuroscience, existential-humanistic, psychodynamic, and solution-focused, I focus on mindfulness and acceptance-informed therapy, particularly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Your willingness to seek help is a courageous step towards healing & change. I believe in the transformative power of a therapeutic relationship and view it as our combined effort. I use LGBTQIA+ affirming, social justice-oriented, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approaches to foster a safe, consistent and curious environment that supports your wisdom while guiding your pursuit of valued and meaningful living. Our partnership will include my extensive education & advanced training working with individuals who have been adversely impacted by relational and attachment disruptions, abuse/neglect and complex traumatic experiences.

I use a strength-based and humanistic approach when conducting psychological evaluations and providing feedback.
I provide psychological and neuropsychological assessments for children, teens, and adults. I value working collaboratively with individuals and families to help identify specific concerns. I do this by looking at the whole individual including their biological/genetic development and what environmental factors may be contributing to current mental health symptoms. I provide a strength-based and non-judgmental space where we can figure out how the pieces fit together, what the whole picture means, and where to go next. I believe that psychological evaluations can lead to greater self-awareness and be a foundational steppingstone.

My counseling education focused on depth and humanistic approaches to therapy, letting the client discover and gain insight into their situation.
Now Accepting New Clients. Are you grieving the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a home, a job, or…pretty much anything that you cared about and is now gone? If so, let's talk. I see clients for a wide variety of issues, but I specialize in working with grief. Other concerns that I often work with are life transitions, men's issues, and anxiety.

My theoretical orientation is eclectic, but rooted in the principles of Humanistic and Existential therapeutic styles.
Men are often raised to believe that expressing emotions, or asking for help is a sign of weakness. Many of us were taught to be stoic, no matter what we are feeling. This unfortunate and destructive stigma can influence many to ignore the importance of striving to be mentally healthy, or to avoid confiding in close friends or family. This type of emotional isolation can lead to unhealthy stress levels, difficulty with relationships, or general dissatisfaction with life. It is not just a men's issue, as many women have similar struggles.

Are you struggling to live the life you want? Do you keep finding yourself in the same place without knowing how to change? Current situations and events can trigger old pain & trauma which can be confusing & negatively impact relationships. They can also lead to creating misguided stories that you tell yourself and that keep you anxious or in fight/flight states. I believe we sometimes need help untangling and making sense of our experiences and/or trauma in life in order to thrive. Through non-judgmental warmth, compassion and self-reflection, we re-wire old thoughts and behaviors and help you live a more authentic life.

You might be someone who is exhausted from looking for a therapist who looks even a little like you. Maybe you are feeling grief, heaviness, sadness, and even anger about..everything. Perhaps you have saved every mental health Instagram slide deck and TikTok, but you still don’t feel like it’s clicking for you. You may be someone at a crossroads with the story and template you have been told you need to fit into. You may suspect that there is more-more to expect, hope for, and be.

Many people grow up in dysfunction and therefore they relate in inappropriate ways. Clients that I have helped the most typically relate to these dysfunctional ways: They guess at what normal is. They judge themselves without mercy. They have difficulty relaxing and enjoying life. They have difficulty with intimate relationships. They over-react to changes over which they have no control. They constantly seek approval and affirmation. They feel that they are different from other people. They avoid conflict or aggravate it; rarely do they deal with it. They fear failure, but sabotage their success.

Engaging the heart and mind through a reflective therapeutic process to increase awareness, creativity, and wisdom. A PhD in Psychology and a MS in Marriage and Family Therapy, Dr. Thomas's education and training has provided her with a multidimensional perspective- she understands the web of connection and emotional dynamics that unfold in families, couples, and larger systems. Dr. Thomas's philosophical beliefs stem from the understanding that we are connected, and it is through this awareness that we can heal and create meaning from our life experiences.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
