My approach is integrative, humanistic, and strengths-based.
Feeling overwhelmed–personally, emotionally or relationally–can wear us down and leave us feeling stuck. And especially when you’re stuck, searching for resources for change and growth takes strength and guts! Counseling creates opportunities to increase awareness and facilitate change with guided support. You may have specific goals you want to focus on, or a deep sense of wanting more.

I am rooted in humanistic therapy, which is a client-centered approach emphasizing unconditional acceptance.
Sometimes it’s painful to face things about ourselves or our situations that we would rather ignore. It's worth it to face them because it gives us the opportunity to look at things from a different perspective, to ask different questions, to challenge ourselves, and ultimately to get more of what we want out of life. Understanding where we've been and how we got here is important, but in order to feel better, we often have to do something different. In therapy we can learn to identify what the options are, evaluate the risks and benefits of different options, and make the best choice for ourselves.

You’re the reliable one for your family, friends, and employer. On the outside, you’ve got it together, but on the inside, you’re starting to fall apart. Self-doubt is swimming in your head. Anxiety is welling up, and you are afraid it will spill out at the wrong moment. Your worries are taking up more and more space in your mind and life, and they are getting in the way of your dreams. You’re looking for a therapist who will listen deeply and give you space to unpack your experiences, but also gently lead you to new territory and the next step in healing.

From the very beginning, I work to build trust and a foundation for my clients that allows them to feel safe to share and explore their personal narrative. I empower individuals to recognize that they have the ability to change negative ways of thinking, create new patterns of relationships with themselves and others, and set boundaries that allow them to move through the world feeling supported. My main focus is treating eating disorders using the HAES foundation. I am a certified clinical trauma professional currently working on my EMDR certification. Other modalities I utilize are CBT, DBT, IFS, Solution Focused, MI, and more.

My ideal client has a life-long habit of being a ruthless self critic - unkind and even cruel to self. Self-compassion is the extending of kindness, care, warmth, and understanding (instead of beratement and criticism) toward yourself when faced with shortcomings, inadequacies, or failures. Self-compassion is the positive care and nurturing you offer yourself when you make mistakes, embarrass yourself, or come up short of a goal you were hoping to achieve. Having self-compassion means honoring and accepting your own essential humanity. Self-compassion is having grace for oneself. Sound like an impossibly high bar? It's not!

That constant nagging voice of “Am I good enough?” is ever present. Feeling pulled to please everyone, you are worn down. From the outside, it looks like you’ve got it together! On the inside, you’re stressed, doubting yourself, and wondering if you can feel true joy again. You don’t know where to begin to change things and worry about failing, so you don’t do anything. Questioning if you even deserve to feel better, you are left feeling stuck and alone in this cave of overwhelm, while life keeps going on without you.

I work with a combination of somatic awareness, analysis, creativity, and deep, honest conversation in my work with clients. I have been sitting with folks for over 15 years and have learned so much in that time through my work, and as the field of therapy and counseling has continued to evolve and grow. My client sessions are involved interactions, where I ask questions, give feedback, and encourage that magic combination of accountability and grace with yourself and others. We live in a larger context and system, and an understanding of that system and your place in it will also inform our work at all times.

Humanistic Therapists

How does humanistic therapy work?

One tenet of humanistic therapy is that people are good. The humanistic approach is concerned with a person’s ability to accept oneself. It likewise encourages a person to overcome self-criticism and self-defeating tendencies, as well as disapproval from others. This approach also emphasizes self-actualization and treating an individual as a whole person. A foundation of this therapy type: The patient is the expert in their life, and treatment often takes the individual’s lead.

Is humanistic therapy evidence-based?

Humanistic therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has found that humanistic therapy can lead to significant improvement, and for some people it can be just as effective as other therapies, such as Cognitive behavioral therapy. The benefits of humanistic therapy are enduring.

How long does humanistic therapy last?

The goal of humanistic therapy is to understand a person’s day-to-day experiences. While sessions can be short-term and last over a few months, therapy can sometimes continue beyond that and last up to a year or more. And because patients learn the theory behind humanistic therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is humanistic therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with humanistic therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in addressing poor self-esteem and self-sabotage, as well as improving conditions including anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can be long standing, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve learned during treatment.
