I use cognitive, experiential, and somatic modalities and mindfulness to bring awareness to conditioned beliefs, feelings, and ways of perceiving.
Early experiences result in our developing defensive structures that are meant to protect our vulnerability, but also create restrictions in our capacity to feel or perceive what is happening in the moment. This patterning shapes our perception of others, and also of ourselves. Although traditional insight-oriented talk therapy allows for an understanding which can harmonize our awareness with our everyday life, we embody early experience in ways that limit the power of insight to undo, and restrict our emotional intelligence. My orientation to psychotherapy is to work through emotional and experiential patterning, without bypassing the power of understanding.

My work is expressive and somatic based.
My practice invites you to view the therapeutic process as an inquiry into the meanings and behaviors that are impacting your life. Together, we apply creative and somatic (body-sourced) techniques for navigating with awareness daily circumstances and relationships with others. Using a trauma-informed dialogue, we clarify and cultivate a primary relationship to your strengths. Your resilience, then, is directed with a dynamic skill set toward healthy relating and in mindful creating toward the fluid integrity you compose as your life.

My approach is rooted with the notion that we have access to self-healing and empowerment by attuning to our bodily experience from within (somatic awareness) to our emotional thought process, which incorporates holistic, relational, behavioral, and attachement modalities - along with somatic and psycho education.
I am a relational somatic therapist, which means that being real matters and the relationship that develops between us is important. Part of the process of therapy is buidling trust and cultivating an alliance. The work I will assist you with involves a sincere effort to go inside yourself and uncover what you're actually experiencing, and then communicate that. We can discuss your difficulties and identify how you can influence them.

Welcome, I'm Carter, a somatic therapist passionate about empowering people to discover their distinct voices. Through a holistic approach centered on body awareness and mindful exploration, I create a safe, sensory-sensitive space. Guiding clients in understanding how their bodies hold and express emotions, we uncover pathways to self-expression and healing. Sometimes it can be hard to sift through the noise of our world. By slowing down and tuning into our bodies we can illuminate the parts of ourselves that yearn to be seen and heard. I will support you to identify and honor your values, strengthening your authentic voice.

My work is informed by depth psychology especially contemporary psychoanalytic therapy, as well as somatic processes, accessing the wisdom of the body.
For over 33 years I have been blessed to work with individuals and couples who put their trust in me to facilitate their own personal healing. Clients have relied on my devotion, warmth, insights and authentic presence to hold them in a safe, sacred space. Through a collaborative exploration, we explore the thoughts, feelings, belief systems that are at the root of life-long patterns. Awareness of these patterns is crucial. However, lasting change requires more than insight. We need to directly experience and release the underlying energies and wounds that block your life force, so you can live and express your authentic gifts.

As a trauma-informed somatic therapist, we explore how our experiences both affect and are affected by our bodies.
Growing up, we are exposed to many spoken and unspoken messages about our inherent worth, and what it takes to secure love and approval in our families and cultures. These self-beliefs, often unconscious to us, manifest in our nonverbal body language: the way we walk, talk, and own space in the world.

I practice Mindfulness and Somatic based Cognitive Therapy to help treat Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, Relationship, and life's woes. Together we will understand what causes your suffering and create change. Our traumas, difficult relationships, COVID, loss, and heartache, can all be confusing and debilitating and influence us to live patterns of suffering through our behaviors, beliefs, habitual thinking and life circumstances. By discovering and practicing new behaviors you will learn how to relate to your thoughts, emotions, and body in a manner that allows you to live the life that you want to be living.

CBT, mindfulness, somatic and trauma release protocols are my specialties.
You're too hard on yourself. Others tell you this and you've thought "it's just how I am." And now you've found yourself caring more for others than yourself and still your inner voice is negative and critical - which causes low mood & motivation, isolation, anxiety, relationship distress, trauma triggering & coping habits that actually worsen things. I would like to introduce you to the kind coach inside yourself. In 15 years of practice it's clear to me: the barriers to healing and happiness are linked to our inner voice. Changing from critical to kind, changes everything. Let's help you uncover and love your best self!

The main modalities I use are AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), Somatic Experiencing, IFS (Internal Family Systems), and PSIP (Psychedelic Somatic Interactional Psychotherapy).
I take a systemic, whole-person in-context view to my work. My approach is not one-size-fits-all, rather, we build our plan of care together. Your input on how we work together and where we go with that work is a huge part of the process. I openly acknowledge the inherent power dynamic in the therapeutic relationship, and work to shift that into true relational work - we work as a team. I strive to help you discover your innate capacity to heal, to grow, and am explicit about the methods I use in session to help bring about this capacity. Consent and open dialogue are essential to our work together.

Do you feel as though you need tactile ways to manage stress and anxiety related to past traumas, sport performance or burnout? I offer Somatic Experiencing, a mind-body approach to heal trauma, increase emotional regulation and increase inner resiliency to past, current and future stress. I also offer coaching to higher functioning individuals and athletes. If you are a couple, I may be able to help improve your communication and trust. I offer leading edge approaches to help you shift from surviving to thriving: Somatics; relational, attachment and experiential work; Wise Self/Parts work (similar to IFS); visualizations; and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (similar to Somatic Experiencing) for healing trauma, including shock, developmental, complex/CPTSD, attachment trauma, and panic attacks.
Wholeness, Celebration, Joy, Dignity, Compassion are fundamental qualities of a life truly lived. Discovering who we are is our birthright. But we must walk our path to discover ourselves and go on the hero and heroine’s journey that asks us to step into the unknown, relinquish the things we know we must let go of and claim the truth we know is ours. By being our unique selves, our lives flourish and the world is a better place. Making your dreams come alive means being uniquely you. You’ll be able to say, This is my life, I’m taking it seriously and enjoying it! And yes, you can learn to say out loud and mean it: I love myself!

It takes a brave vulnerability to seek support and to begin understanding ourselves more deeply, but you don't have to do it alone. I believe that what matters most in this work is co-creating a therapeutic relationship based on trust & authenticity. Through undoing "aloneness." in experiencing emotional safety & the basic need of being seen & heard, we can begin to grow & heal. My approach is integrative & collaborative and involves connecting with your emotional & somatic experience as we explore your inner world and past/present life experiences & relationships in order to gain meaningful insight & understand yourself more fully.

I do this with an integrative approach of somatic modalities, archetypal, recognizing and gentle inner work around behaviors, beliefs, and emotional patterns.
I provide healing support to individuals, couples and children who want a sense of control over their lives, deeply understand themselves, to connect with meaning and embodiment. Challenges I work with are trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, identity issues, mens issues, ADHD/Autism/neurodivergence, eco-anxiety and psychedelic integration. I help couples recognize repeating patterns, substituting defensiveness with clear vulnerable communication, and strengthen intimacy.

Somatic Therapists

How does somatic therapy work?

Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?

Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?

Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
