For me, the focus of therapy is not primarily to fix disorders or cure diseases; I seek to increase your positive life skills rather than address negative patterns. What happens in the therapy hour is a microcosm of life at large. How you do anything is how you do everything. And so, I give special attention to the actual, to the present moment, in particular your immediate subjective experience. Ultimately, when you become aware of your resistance(s) to pain and return to wholeness and authenticity, my work is done.

My therapy sessions are designed to improve your confidence, give you coping skills, and assist you in the healing process. My approach not only address your mental health symptoms but also skill development in the areas of communication and conflict management toward improving relationships. I encourage an open dialogue throughout the process, so the therapeutic relationship allows for feedback in both directions.

I believe we all have rich, inner worlds fueled by confidence, compassion and curiosity. When trauma or early relationship disturbances disconnect us from this, symptoms of depression or anxiety arise. My goal is to hear my clients’ stories, honing in on the gems that are buried there to guide them back to their core selves. With empathy and respect, I work with my clients to create, in Marsha Linehan’s words, a life worth living.

If you are reading this now, you may be struggling with feelings or experiences that have become hard to bear and even understand. You may feel alone and as though no one seems to really get what you are going through. It may be some immediate situation or transition in life that feels extra hard to navigate, or some long-standing grief or pattern in relationships that seems to have a hold on you. You may have symptoms such as anxiety or depression, perhaps with less than optimal means of coping. Psychotherapy can help you understand and change.

My focus is on relationships, the relationships we have with ourselves and others, and what is blocking them from feeling joy. I work with individuals and couples primarily focusing on the communication styles and how to improve upon them. I work with the hope of each relationship eventually finding different ways to cope, deepen, and advance into something different and rewarding. I feel all of our experiences in life have led to this moment. Whether the experience was a good one, or a bad one, they have informed our decisions about how to move forward.

For teens: Perhaps you have a hunch that something is not quite right and you’re not feeling like yourself. Maybe something happened recently that is more than you can hold, that is overwhelming, anxiety-provoking, or pushing you toward despair. Maybe there are some big decisions coming up and you want to talk it all out. Maybe you just want a weekly time to check in and ask yourself, “How am I really doing?” Whatever it is you're going through, you don’t have to “go it alone.” Think of me as a relational/emotional coach who would love to walk beside you as you navigate the ups and downs of teen life.

I take a systemic, whole-person in-context view to my work. My approach is not one-size-fits-all, rather, we build our plan of care together. Your input on how we work together and where we go with that work is a huge part of the process. I openly acknowledge the inherent power dynamic in the therapeutic relationship, and work to shift that into true relational work - we work as a team. I strive to help you discover your innate capacity to heal, to grow, and am explicit about the methods I use in session to help bring about this capacity. Consent and open dialogue are essential to our work together.

The youth, adults, and families I have been fortunate enough to work with, as well as my own personal experiences, have shown me that people find a way to communicate their experiences courageously and persistently. I believe that meeting those communications with curiosity and empathy can help restore emotional balance when it’s lost and that this process can open up new experiences and new understandings of the struggles that often bring people to therapy.

I’ve always believed that there is an art to doing therapy. For me, that’s about balancing courageous authenticity, a strong clinical lens, direct feedback, and a strength based approach that empowers people to be real about their areas of growth. I have several modalities that I draw upon in my work - which include Attachment Based Family Therapy, EMDR Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy and Narrative Therapy with a focus on emotional patterns. At the core, it’s all about love. I work to restore any relationship, be it with yourself or another, that is no longer led from the heart.

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
