I'm the author of the following books: Acceptance and Commitment Skills for Perfectionism and High-Achieving Behaviors; ACT beyond OCD: An Acceptance and Commitment Therapy workbook for adults; The ACT Workbook for Teens with OCD: Unhook Yourself and Live Life to the Full; Escaping the Emotional Roller Coaster; Parenting a troubled teen.
Understanding "why or how" a problem has become a problem is not enough; "doing something about it" is what matters. If we work together, we'll come up with a treatment plan to tap into the drivers of your struggles and start making a shift. I encourage behavioral-change processes based on your personal values and what's keeping you stuck. If you're not ready to make a change, let's help you move from stuckness to readiness. I specialize in Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). www.eastbaybehaviortherapycenter.com

As an ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) therapist, I combine therapeutic yoga practices with ACT therapy methods to help you train your mind, rewire your brain, and do what works. My primary focus is empowering you to take a deep dive into your unique “operating systems” so you can learn to ‘run your mind and emotions’, instead of being run by the unworkable patterns and conditioned reflexes that have kept you stuck… sometimes for years or even decades.

It is such a privilege to work with people to identify, heal, resolve and shift past experiences and issues. When trauma interrupts our growing up or early adult life experience, we are often left with coping mechanisms that worked temporarily, or at least provided an anesthetic and bandage, but ultimately left us with an unresolved history and even bigger problems such as depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, relationship trauma and/or compulsive behaviors. You deserve to feel freedom, relief and release from these truths. Let's work together to find your path to wholeness.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
