Feeling better is no longer a mystery. This is fantastic news! We no longer need to be stuck in negative mood states, feel paralyzing levels of anxiety & debilitating emotional/physical pain. Instead, our brain can be transformed when the right combination of therapy skills and techniques are utilized. My 15 years of extensive training as a psychologist has uniquely equipped me with the ability to apply integrative and evidenced-based interventions to achieve maximum results. I blend compassion focused therapy, cognitive-behavioral methods, eastern practices and cutting-edge neuroscience to help you rewire the brain for a healthier you! There is hope!

I have been specializing in Biofeedback since 2004, with a primary focus on chronic pain, anxiety and stress management. Through the use of Biofeedback techniques and technology, relaxation, breathing, and other mind-body techniques, I have helped many people struggling with stress, pain and pain-related symptoms such as sleep problems, anxiety, muscle tension and breathing difficulties. Biofeedback principles and technology are amazing! If you would like to know how stress affects your body you can see it in your own " biofeedback physiological mirror" which works similar to your bathroom mirror.

Many people avoid seeking help for fear that they or their children will be labeled. My motto is: "Peel off the labels and see the person underneath." I believe you are a person with unique needs, strengths, and challenges, that there are complex reasons you are living the life you are living today - AND, you can improve. Emotional pain and problems are just as natural and normal as physical pain and problems. When we let go of the labels we have about ourselves, our problems, or therapy in general, we can begin healing the pain and resolving the problems.

I have a particular expertise in anxiety, relationships, and illness such as cancer, fibromyalgia, traumatic brain injury, and post-concussion syndrome.
Central to my practice is the belief that all of us deserve respect no matter our histories, and have within ourselves the wisdom for peace and healing. Our individual journeys are at times celebratory and at other times heartbreaking. We may not always be able to choose the circumstances we face such as illness, or the end of a relationship. Instead, we can choose what we are going to do about our challenges. We can choose how to integrate this information into our overall life stories for greater joy, creativity, and balance.

I empower people to let go of the pain, loneliness, and isolation of grief so they can live more in the present and be themselves again. I also help individuals and couples look beyond the problems that bring them to therapy, and identify the changes they can make to restore happiness and harmony to their lives. Utilizing the education, support, and exploration that take place in therapy, clients leave with greater confidence and hope, and with new tools to address the challenges they face. I also offer articles and videos on my Website to inform and educate: See www.joedubowski.com/

Rising above our past, our pain, our wounds can feel incomprehensible and isolating.
Healing is a circular and cyclical journey with many paths, choices, & discoveries. We meet you where you are today, acknowledge that you are ever-changing, ever evolving. We know how hard it is to ask for help…to embrace, hold, and make space for change…we know how challenging it is to have a dissolution of self, or a version of yourself that no longer fits. Together, we can uncover & compost outdated & stifling beliefs, unrealistic expectations or goals, let go of worries & fears, discover self-sabotage, burrow through behaviors & deeply hidden feelings & emotions that keep us stuck, fearful, unable to step into empowered selves.

Personally, I know how difficult it was for me to get out of bed when suffering from depression and anxiety and to go about the everyday when concerned about having another panic attack. I know how valuable it was for me to have someone to talk to that wouldn't judge me or make me feel guilty about being exactly where I was at the time. The idea of "you should be fine", or "you have no reason to be anxious or depressed" is hurtful and doesn't help.

I have been deeply interested in the field of psychology from a very young age. My respect and commitment to this field have never wavered. For over 30 years, I have seen clients improve their lives in ways both large and small. Change may occur by learning new coping strategies, grieving a past loss, working through trauma or abuse, or by beginning to trust another.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, disconnected or stuck and powerless, I can help you find your strength and make your way to a more serene and satisfying life. Occasionally people are well aware of how their suffering has emerged, but often the cause is unclear. My aim is to partner with clients to help them understand themselves and confront any life-limiting beliefs. From there, we can facilitate changes that will bring relief and build a positive sense of self, which in turn, will enrich your relationships and your life.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
