Life can leave us with strain and heartache which can be overwhelming. At times, we normalize the impact these events have on us and rather than seek help, we suffer in silence. It can be terrifying to leave behind the familiar, even if change can lead to happiness and peace. Therapy provides a safe place to take the steps towards lasting change.

I specialize in conducting therapy with adults having mental health, legal, substance abuse, interpersonal, educational, medical, career, and relationship problems. I help individuals change unhelpful thinking patterns by recognizing inflexible demands they place on themselves, the world, and others. My therapeutic style helps individuals learn how to dispute beliefs causing negative emotional and behavioral consequences. Clients learn they have the ability to change and control their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, with the underlying goal of helping the client become his or her own therapist.

Myrna Sarowitz
PsyD, MA
I coach women (and sometimes men) to value themselves as much as they value others. My clients have had the following characteristics. See if any of these describe you. They want to be liked by everyone. They become anxious when others are angry with them. They avoid conflict at any cost. They judge themselves as never good enough. They are afraid to express differing points of view. They value the opinions others hold of them, more than they value their own self-approval.

My approach to psychotherapy is holistic, integrating mind body and spirit, through a variety of modalities. My personal belief system influences my work. Specifically, I believe that as individuals, we continually bring forth new possibilities. People come to therapy with wounds. But it is in the wounds that the light shines in. In therapy, we learn we need not fear the places where one feels stuck, overwhelmed or enslaved. My diverse background has deepened my understanding for those wrestling with existential, spiritual and religious belonging, life transitions, sexual orientation, relational challenges and childhood traumas.

Everyone at times feels overwhelmed by life. The onset of a serious illness, the death of a loved one, and other events may have a profound impact on our daily lives. Traumatic events, whether expected or not, may affect our relationships with our spouse, family members, and others. They may also result in difficulties functioning at work and other aspects of our lives. Even welcomed life transitions, such as getting married, becoming a parent, embarking on a new career, or adapting to a new locality often bring surprising challenges that, if unmet, may accumulate causing disruptions in our lives.

Symptoms are a story not yet told. I deeply respect this about people and believe this to be true. This is why there is value in 'the talking cure' with a trained professional therapist. While finding ‘THE’ therapist is an understandable aim, it is an impossible ideal. Finding someone with enough training, clinical and life experience who is curious and seeks to understand you as a dynamic and complex person, might instead be the goal. Just as there is no ‘perfect therapist’, there is also no ‘perfect patient'. Emotional suffering is often caused by factors outside of our awareness, and attempts of self-help can only get us so far.

I work with adolescents and adults who are experiencing difficulty managing symptoms of anxiety and depression. I implement coping tools to allow these clients to better understand the nature of their triggers and how they can effectively manage their often distressing feelings and behaviors. I encourage clients to be active participants in their own lives by setting goals for themselves which include how they would like to feel and how they wish to engage with the world around them.

My focus is to empower families by improving their relationships and communication so family members are more of a support than a burden to each other. Family issues that I commonly treat are couple's communication, sexual issues in a relationship, mixed-agenda couples (where one is considering a divorce), co-parenting after a divorce, behavior issues with children, as well as abuse or neglect in families. I also help families where a member struggles with self-injury, depression, or anxiety.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
