Divorce is common but recovery from it is often a difficult thing.
With extensive specialized training in marriage and family therapy, chemical dependency, and co-dependency, I have worked in the mental health field for 35 years. My credentials include a Masters Degree in counseling and licensure as a mental health counselor by the State of Indiana. My clients are typically people who are struggling with marital or dating relationships; divorce and recovery from it; or grief and loss. I prefer to work with clients who are educated, insightful, and highly motivated for positive change.

**I AM NOT ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS AT THIS TIME** Your family has experienced a major stressor-separation/divorce, loss or trauma that has impacted your lives. Life feels out of control and scary. Your young child is having difficulty sleeping, is worried and struggling in school. Your tween is sad and is acting out. Your teen is angry and doesn't seem to care about anything anymore. You're beginning to wonder if you have what it takes to help your family heal. It's getting hard to manage your emotions and provide comfort to your child/teen. You've tried it on your own...it's time to let someone help.

I have been working with individuals and couples for 20 years. Many of the clients I see suffer from depression, anxiety, work and relationship issues (including communication problems, feeling disconnected, infidelity, and divorce). I help clients find new ways of coping, seeing and thinking, and relating. Although I am knowledgeable and skilled in several therapeutic methods, I don't believe in "one-size-fits-all" therapy. Instead, I adapt my treatment plan to meet the needs, goals, and personality of each client.

Although popular media states that money is the primary reason for divorce, that is not in line with my experience.
People come to therapy when the pain that they are feeling becomes unmanageable and can no longer be ignored. I have worked with men and women, helping them to discover and understand how they have repeated and become "stuck" in non-productive patterns with the most important people in their lives. Couples often say, they continue to have the same fights, over and over and never realize what they are really fighting about or come to a resolution.

I have spent the last few years of my career working closely with young adults and adults struggling with anxiety, depression and trauma. I also work with those struggling with addictions. I take a holistic approach with dealing with addictions. Treating all the issues that have lead to the use of substance. My typical client starts therapy seeking help to resolve issues that have lead to problems with school, work and/or relationships. I use several different modes of therapy to help them reach their goals such as motivational interviewing, supportive reflection, dialectical behavioral therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.

Whether you’re stressed, experiencing deep sadness or pain or having a hard time identifying what troubles you, we can work together to find the best solution for you. There is nothing like experiencing hard things and then taking the step to talk to a stranger in order to get help – what courage! My goal is to create a safe and non-judgmental environment where my clients can explore their concerns, find solutions, and achieve greater emotional wellbeing.

We all strive for a fulfilled life. Peace, joy, and purpose, not just surviving or forcing yourself through the day. Life changes, loss, stress, anxiety, depression, trauma and other challenges can make this difficult at times. Working through challenges and developing a life that is meaningful to you sometimes involves taking a leap and seeking help. Taking this step can be scary or intimidating, but also can bring hope and the ability to move forward into the life you deserve.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
